| 22 U.S. Veterans commit suicide each day (Posted on 2/2/13 at 9:21 am)
quote:
That rate has edged higher from 1999 when an estimated 20 veterans took their lives every day, the report noted. In 2007, the veteran suicide pace temporarily dipped to 18 per day.
quote:
Nearly 70 percent of all veteran suicides were among men and women aged 50 or older, the VA said.
quote:
Also Friday, the U.S. Army released its monthly suicide report, offering a preliminary tally for 2012 in that branch: 325 "potential" suicides among active and reserve troops — the highest number in history, Army officials noted.
LINK is it lack of benefits or trauma that causes this.....or..TINHAT....cost cutting measures by a secretive wing of the government to decrease spending and take those out who may have info about past operations that could hurt the US?

I would imagine it's mental health PTSD issues that cause the bulk of it I'm sure things like marital infidelity from spouses can't be great for your mental well being either

Lack of a defined mission. Starting with Vietnam, nearly every major mission we've charged our military with has been more poorly defined than the last. It's a lot easier to live with watching your buddy bleed out in the dirt fighting the Nazis than fighting "communism" or "terrorism".

I'd imagine it is the same crap that causes suicide in the general population chronic physical or emotional pain, lack of meaning to life, loss of loved one, terminal illness, divorce, loss of job, feelings of helplessness, etc.

okay just to take a stab at things
quote:
38,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year.
quote:
What percentage of US population has served in the military? 9%. Active Military - 5 million ,Veterans - 23.5 million
22*365=8,030 270M(300m-30m)/30k(38-8)= 9000 (1 in every 9000 civilian, never served) 30M/8k=3750(1 in every 3,750 to ever serve)

While ev en just one suicide is too many, these numbers mean absolutely nothing without context. What percentage of the Veteran population do these numbers represent? What do the numbers look like for the US populatiuon as a whole? How do they compare to similar age groups in other high stress populations? Poorly written article is poorly written.

NO I got the answer, men commit suicide far more often than women:
quote:
In the U.S, male adolescents commit suicide at a rate five times greater than that of female adolescents
and being that there are a significantly higher % of men are military than women, it would only be reasonable that the stats would be swayed in that direction. I always though it was women who commit more suicide....but it's only that they "attempt" suicide 3 times more.
quote:
suicide attempts are 3 times more common among females than males

According to the army, they just passed the national suicide rate by a percentage point it two Despite painstakingly hammering suicide prevention to its soldiers, a program which by its own admission is a total failure. I agree that the numbers mean nothing without the data you mentioned, which would be hard if not impossible to collect.

Then go and check the number of suicides committed by relatives of soldiers. It may get you to rethink this PTSD diagnosis getting all the attention It has something to do with whether or not you have the means or ability to provide for your family

All this recent Falkland Islands talk led me to read about that fairly short war recently and I came across an article re the high suicide rate of Brit veterans who fought there. Surprised me given the type of war and relative shortness of it. Here's that article

ahhh so there was no defined enemy in korea or vietnam or grenada? sigh. so nazis is a enemy but commies are not? You can thank the politically correct crowd for not calling it the war on islamofascism or radical islam instead of war on terror.
