Labor Force During The 1st Term- Link

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released jobs numbers for January Friday showing that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 157,000 and the unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent.

Lost in these headline numbers was another rise in the number of people not in the labor force.

This number now stands at a staggering 89 million, up from 80.5 million when President Obama took office.

This means that there are currently 8.5 million more Americans not in the labor force than just four years ago.

Forget all the other numbers.

This continued explosion of people not in the labor force should be tremendously concerning as it represents an obstacle for the government to ever balance the budget without drastically raising taxes on those still working.

What is confusing to me is how these people are not factored into the unemployment rate. So over the last four years, apparently, 8.9 million people have either died, hit the loto and quite their jobs, or retired. shite dont add up.

without going into too much detail the reason the these people are not factored into the unemployment rate is they only count unemployed people for a set amount of time. For example if you were to lose your job on Monday, you would be counted among the unemployed for a period of time and then you'd just be written off.

This is how they can get away with showing unemployment at 7.9% or whatever. Were they to tell the truth, the real number is something around 20% unemployment in this country.

I get what your saying. But if i lose my job and it takes me, say three years to fing another one, but you quit counting me in the unemployment numbers after two, what purpose does that serve? I know it will allow the gov to keep the unemployment numbers down, but what does that matter? I mean is it for presentation, to make us look better across the board? My whole thing is if these people dont matter to the numbers then why are they realeased in the first place. You would figure the gov wouldnt want these numbers out there cuz people like you and me can see that in actuality the % is towards 20
