| Legit question: How will the Saints overcome cap problems? (Posted on 2/1/13 at 9:35 am)
I'm asking this because it seems that we're going to have some cap problems for a number of years. Caught a program last night (don't know if it was a re-telecast) and former Executive VP for the New Orleans Saints Jim Miller was on it. The main topic was how do the Saints fix the defense when there's so many needs and so few dollars. Miller's position was that the Saints have to get get lucky on FAs and the draft because the team has cap problems extending for years. I haven't kept up with all the cap stuff but I didn't realize just how bad it was. What can really be done other than just make the cuts and take the hit?

In Loomis i trust! Last yr we were in a similar situation, and we still resigned Brees and Colston plus we signed some free agents

This. If you want to see real cap problems, look at what Carolina is up against.

Restructure some crucial contracts. Teams do it every year. Mickey is one of the best.

I wouldn't say a similar situation. We were right against the cap, not way over. His track record for track management is good, but this is a tricky one. We'll have to wait and see.

Get rid of veterans with high pay, average production. Draft well, and fill your bench with younger talent that has upside. Loomis is incredibly gifted, you guys will be fine.

Drew Brees needs to restructure his contract. there is no reason to be making over $20 million a year. Peyton Manning got it to the detriment of the 10 and 11 colts. Tom Brady doesn't do it and look where the patriots have been for the past eight years. If Brady settles for $16-$18 million a year there's no reason for Brees to make 22 - $23 million. It's not feasible in the cap era.

They will have to start shedding vets that make too much for little production. They will have to start letting guys go and just replacing them with next guy up. And they will have to get get LOTS of guys to restructure.

our cap issue is bad too. in the end it'll all get worked out just as Carolina's will, but the cost of doing so may be a big one. fortunately some of our big price guys that will be cut are underacheivers anyway, so we may wind up doing ok

Mickey called to confirm what he should do... subtract Will Smith- net $3.5mil added subtract Vilma net $1mil added offer Harper $12mil for 3years with token signing bonus rolling bonuses further forward- save a couple a $mil a year OR cut him -take a $3.8mil cap hit and move on, only $1.5net added this year but $6mil added in 2014. Restructure Jahri Evans, he's hitting almost $10mil a yr in cap for the next 4 years. Roll some forward a year or two and provide a couple of million for this year at least If you aren't assured Hawthorne is a 3-4 ILB answer cut him. Will cost $6.5mil to save $8mil. $1.5mil net savings isn't worth it if ya think he's possibly legit in a 3-4. Big question to be answered. Bunkley's role also needs to be defined. It would cost $4mil in cap to cut him. It would save a net $13mil over the next 4 years though (none in '13). If he is a real NT answer he's keepable even if spendy. As a 3-4DE $22mil worth of cap the next 4 years looks too exorbitant. I suspect he stays Those will get you close to the projected cap, maybe not even under though. I thought Loomis did great with what he had to work with last year- maybe his best ever. This year will be an even larger challenge though. Certainly the toughest cap situation since '06. Oh, we need $10-15 million a year for Bushrod or some other LT & a Jimmy Graham extension.

lets just take the time to thank Roger Goodell for saving us all this cap space from all the draft picks he's taken away from us.

Seems like we have this problem every year and Loomis finds a way to restructure contracts and have cap room to sign a couple good FAs. Guy really is genius at playing the numbers game.

In full agreement. The challenges don't get any easier though. He has commented since the season ended that the cap tightness kinda rolls in waves. Right now we're bumping up to the tsunami type. We're 2nd or 3rd in highest projected cap for 2013 right now. $10-15mil over. All of what I listed above only starts to get ya there. There is no escaping the need for painful cuts in the ongoing battle to tame the cap.

Come on that's only because the patriots structured it that way. in real money Brady's below market contract is far less impactful towards the patriots salary cap and towards the construction of their team than Drews deal is. Facts are facts Brady accepted a below-market deal for the good of his franchise, while Brees held out during a tumultuous off-season and demanded fair market value at the future expense of our roster. I fully expect Brees to restructure at the request of Loomis/Benson as he wants to win as badly as anybody in the NFL.
