I've always liked Will Smith, hell, I sold him his Playstation 3 when he got drafted here. However, like others have said, the production, or lack there of is not worth the cost. He's going to be 32 next season and I just don't see him being a factor in the 3-4.

Really? for a 32yo declining skills player that you have $5+mil of cap obligated to even if you cut him? Almost $15mil of obligation if ya keep him as is. The Colts would want another 4-3 background DE that has never played any 3-4?
We gotta pay the price for the bad decision the team made in extending him in '08 at $61mil for 6 years.
Many might know we still had $1million of cap hit still this past season for dead money to Reggie Bush.
Loomis is a top cap manager but no one bats 1.000 when it comes to these decisions.

Yet again, it matters what flavor of 34 you guys use.
If he's expected to watch both gaps a la Belichick's 34, yeah he's going to be garbage. If he's just there to watch the edge and push the pocket, he can be successful.

Fine... Smith would probably do very well in a Wade Phillips style 34. It would give him a chance to use his strong body to push the tackle while only looking at one gap.

Unfortunately I think he is gone. I have always like Will. He plays hard every play and plays thru injury.
Agree w/ B+. My memories serves me correct he got screwed out of the Pro Bowl a couple of times.

I think we've established consensus that he is all but gone.
One more add about keeping him- the $5.5million number I was reciting whether you keep him is against the cap for accounting. In reality it is for bonuses that have already been paid to him. I think Smith could still get beyond the vet minimum for another team going 4-3. Hard to imagine offering him $1-2mil to play 3-4 for the first time at age 32.

Well to be fair, IMO it would not be that difficult for him to bulk up and transition to a 3/4 DE. He has always been really good at point of contact and against the run.
I guess what I'm saying is typically speed and explosiveness decrease with age quicker than strength and power. I think it would be a good transition for him and I think he has the frame to bulk up.
I'm not saying the Saints could afford to do it, but I could see Smith playing somewhere as a 3/4 DE.

You're 100% correct and the most disappointing thing is that everyone but the Saint's decision makers knew it. At the time, Grant and Smith became top 10 earners at their position and that was a major risk. They rolled the dice on both and lost miserably on Grant and didn't get even money on Smith. I hope Loomis takes note of the Grant, Smith and Harper situations and plays closer to the vest in the future.
