US Ethanol policy is getting way, way out of hand

The EPA just upped it's mandate use of ethanol made from cellulosic sources.

This is incredibly stupid.

First they diverted 40% of our corn crop to ethanol production now they want to divert forest land that would be used to build our homes into fuel.

LINK

When you read what the owners of the cellulosic ethanol facility in Mississippi say you will note they talk of "urban wood waste" and "straw" and "forest residual" and other non food sources. Almost as an after thought they say "pre-commercial thinnings" (PCT).

The truth of the matter is that PCT is their primary source of cellulose and what you ask is PCT?? ---It is pine trees too small to use for paper or timber. It is the wood we would be using 20 years from now.

Sounds to me like Weyerhauser, GA Pacific or some other giant wood products supplier just got a payback for a large campaign contribution.

Don't have proof. Just a hunch.

We can thank the Bush Administration for pushing this foolishness. Both parties have completely screwed us with this, costing more expenses on our vehicles and other motors.

In NC there is ONE gas station near me that proudly has a sign that says NO ETHEL. I know what Obamas EPA shitty gas does to my boat motor. Here is what you have to use to correct it...

So who is making millions off this seafoam? And why does it not affect our cars as badly as our boats?

Here is a helpful link

Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada

Frick you EPA, Frick you Obama. I despise him more each day.

I'm not sure if it is still true, but refineries are daily being fined across America for not using cellulosic ethanol. The problem can't be remedied by fines which raise your gas price at the pump as there is no plant in America that makes the stuff in the first place.

BP has an ethanol plant in Mermentau, LA, on the river, and according to press releases and their website were using it to experiment and produce cellulosic ethanol/biofuels.

However, according to a press release a few months ago, they've suspended US plans and are concentrating in South America.

Outside of the Iraq War, this was Ws biggest failure as a president. The untold billions of dollars in negative impact this legislation has had is hard to get your mind around.

You mean the fact that you use the same amount of fuel no matter what. My truck gets 14 mpg on the 10% ethanol fuel where as it gets 16 mpg while running 100% gasoline. All this means is my truck is burning the same amount of gas and now wasting corn (or whatever other crop they are using to make the ethanol). Thanks for the higher cost of living since now corn cost more and it's making the price of any product you buy from livestock rise.

I'm not so sure about that. In Louisiana at least, when a pine plot is harvested, it's pretty much clear cut, with some trees left behind, but not necessarily the smaller trash trees. These are usually sorted out at the plant and ground up to pulp for paper and other pulp products. These scraps should just go to the most efficient use not subsidized by the government. If they can make money off it by making turpentine, ethanol, or dog food, more power to 'em.

As far as the governemnt ethanol stuff, I'm all for corn-based ethanol products, but I wouldn't waste them by burning them in my engine...

Cellulosic ethanol is a pipe dream. We have the bacteria adn enzymes to do it, but we can't produce them in any quantity. Worse yet is the lignin. Lignin is the stuff that makes wood "hard" and you have to contend with it somehow.

They've been fricking around(ie, pouring taxmoney at it) with doing this with corncobs for years. Corncobs have a much lower lignin content and they've gotten absolutely nowhere.

This is one of the countless reasons that I would not shed a tear if DC was replaced with a smouldering hole in the ground.
