Are these necessary when carrying? Do they make that much of a difference? If yes, which brand would you recommend?

Yes, I say it does matter, especially if you carry and OWB Holster. I don't think it's quite as crucial for IWB. I actually need to get a nice leather belt soon. I've heard Galco makes a good one.

They're just a stiffer belt, sometimes wider. They help some if you're going to be wearing all day. They keep your pants from sagging down by spreading out the weight of the gun.

Just go to BR Police Supply and buy a 5.11 duty belt. The 2" belts won't fit through belt loops on some jeans. Go with 1.75"

I say yes. I have a nice LSU leather belt that I wear daily that has been destroyed by carrying IWB. Does it affect performance or comfort? No. But I would rather not ruin my nice things.

I also say yes. I think a belt helps iwb too though. I've worn all different belts with my setup and find myself going back to the biggest one when carrying.

If you carry often you will not regret getting a quality belt. IWB or OWB it's worth the money.

Plenty manufacturers make a leather belt that is kydex reinforced. I've gotten them from Sunrise Leather and Aker Leather.

Makes a very big difference IMO. I got one made by Crossbreed for Christmas. I love it.

I had them make a holster - it took about 4 months to get it, but it was very nice custom work.
I forgot to mention ALESSI Leather - excellent product but wait time is long.

Ritchie Leather Co. is also very good (a lot of people like the quality of this over Alessi) and the wait time is not as bad. Can't go wrong with any of the ones I mentioned.

I think they're necessary for IWB or OWB carry. I can understand trying to avoid buying a lot of extra equipment while you figure out what works for you.

For casual wear, I like to use the Wilderness Tactical Instructor belts, 5 stitch. My first one has the original metal buckle, but next one I bought has the plastic buckle. For a dressier belt, most of the custom leather holster makers also make belts. My leather belt was made by Little Bear Leather, but they're out of business. The "Double Duty" belt from Cabela's is not too bad. All leather belts for holster carry are THICK, as they should be. I'm always surprised to see postings on the 'net where someone complains about their leather gun belt being "thick" or "stiff." I have 2 leather belts that were free from LA Police gear. They're ok, but not as good as the others already mentioned. Google custom leather belt makers. A good custom leather belt for holster carry will run you upwards of $50, but it will be money well spent. Depending on the maker, the wait may be weeks to months.
