STILLWATER, Okla. -- Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says the league likely will seek permission from the NCAA to hold a championship game even though it doesn't have the 12 members required under the current rules.

"I think it's reasonable to say if you're going to have a champion that you're going to have to designate it in one fashion or another. But to say it has to be between 12 schools or that there has to be divisional play or there has to be a round-robin, we're deregulating lots of things and that certainly is a candidate."

In reality, UT wants a waiver.

Nailed it

Having a conference championship game when every team has already played each other is ridiculous

I disagree. If we are moving into a playoff, I think all conferences should have to have a title game to make sure that most of the teams attempting to get into the playoff have to face a tough test the last week of the season.

then schedule a tough OOC game, schedule a tough game at the end of the season or add two more teams

having a guaranteed rematch at the end of the season is just dumb

Not only should the Big 12 not be allowed a championship game until they have the proper number of teams, they also should not be allowed to schedule regular season games on championship Saturday.

Are they planning to have divisions again, or would the championship feature the top 2 finishers?

And what about tiebreakers? If they end up with another 3-way tie for first (like they did with Texas, OU, and Tech a few years back) who gets hosed?

So when the Big 12 has a season where the champion finishes 9-0 in conference and then there is a 4 way tie for 2nd place with all of the teams at 5-4, do you still think that the team that went 9-0 and beat all 4 2nd place teams should have to do the rematch?

I didn't mean that to say only the Big 12 should be disallowed. I meant that no regular season games should be played on championship saturday. Only conference championship games.

I agree and frankly the big 12 has the better way to determine the conference champ.

complete nonsense, teams schedule games the first week of Dec long before there were conf champ games.

As long as we continue to use some form of poll or committee to determine who plays for the NC and the people voting in those are biased for teams that played last, everyone should be allowed to play that weekend.

So you would not allow teams that do not play in the CCG in the playoff?

It happened in the SEC in 2001. A 8-3 LSU, IN A REMATCH, knocked Tennnessee out of the national title game.

let them have it... 12's an arbitrary number for such a rule

A. if the conference title is Texas vs. Kansas St. and they played the regular season game in Manhattan, the CCG would be in Austin.

B. if the team that lost the regular season meeting wins the CCG, whatever team is higher in the rankings would go to the BCS/playoff

yep, proving that Conference Champ games are stupid and diminish the regular season.

Would you not let teams in the playoff if they did not play in the CCG?

ETA: While LSU-UT was a rematch, it is not guarenteed in the SEC. In the Big 12, they do play all 9 other teams already.
