Was going to say this as my example and said opening acts are not worthless.

I can only think of one or two times when an opening act (one that I've never heard of prior) has left a good impression on me. Most of the time,in fact, the opener is flatout terrible. Is this a plot by the headliner to make themselves sound better?

Go to more shows. Every artist/band starts out as an opening act to somebody.

In Spring 2009, I went to the 930 club to see Kid Cudi. Kid Cudi was the headliner, Asher Roth was the second guy to perform, and some guy named either B.o.B or Bobby Ray -- or both...it was quite confusing at the time -- was going on first.

The only thing -- I repeat: the only thing -- I remember from that show was this B.o.B or Bobby Ray guy performing this song about a Satellite. It was mindblowing. He brought the house down. I remember nothing else about the show.

The next day I googled "Bobby Ray Satellite" and BOOM what do I find but a mixtape called B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray that includes a song called "Satellite. The mixtape is amazing, and it turns out that he has five other mixtapes out and another one on the way. For the next six months I listened to very little but Mr. Bobby Ray Simmons Jr. And I still content that his mixtape material is better than his album material. And I'm not a hipster either.

So that's why you listen to opening acts.

You are likely not going to good shows or an open minded music fan if you classify them across the board as worthless. They are certainly usually less popular but everyone doesn't start at the top. Part of paying your dues, and I have seen many openers show up a headliner. Just means they're not going to stay openers for long!

Opening acts are a great way to give exposure and increase the audience for a band that isn't as well known as their opening act (think RUSH opening for Kiss). I can name several opening acts that I've seen that were awesome.

The Menzingers opened for Rise Against and were legit.

Crash Kings opened up for Jet and were amazing.

Morning Teleportation was pretty good opening up for Cage the Elephant.

The opening act for Flogging Molly was legit.

Luke Starkiller opening up for anyone was a great experience no matter what.

I'm trying not to hate, but you keep proving yourself to be one of the worst posters on the music board.

I enjoy the opening acts, you'd think a festie guy like yourself would appreciate the up and coming acts.

Festival bands do not equal openers. Way different.

Perhaps you are new around here, but I'm the guy who freely admits that "Call Me Maybe" is a fantastic song. I'm not the guy who advances stupid arse arguments about Kings of Leon sucking ever since "Because of the Times". I'm the guy who rates "Some Nights" as the best track of 2012 (andy by a comfortable margin). I'm not the guy who advises you to listen to the new Dirty Projectors album a few more times because "it takes a couple listens to really 'get'".

The manner in which I judge music is very simple. If it sounds good to me, it's good. If it doesn't sound good to me, it blows. In assessing music on this board, I can promise you I will never waver from the above...not even a little. Unfortunately, I'm unable to promise that I won't from time to time discuss how tasty your mother's pussy is.

Yeah, he's terrible at posting and in life.

But, on the bright side, his mother has a really tasty pussy.

That's an assenine statement. Festival bands are in essence a massive opening act. Not one of the 60 bands you see over 3 days save for maybe, possibly the nightly headliners could generally sell out a venue over 3,000-4,000 seats.

So what bands have never been an opener?

What bands started off their music careers as headliners?

This thread is beyond retarded

Stupid post. Complete nonsense. Here is your two-part homework assignment:
(a) go check lineup for Coachella or Bonnaroo or the like;
(b) submit post acknowledging that you're a moron.

I saw Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins both open for RHCP. It was shortly before 10 was released, we had bought SP's first release so we were sort of familiar with them going into the show, needless to say those opening acts were great.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that one. 10 had been released it just wasn't that popular yet. I think that concert was around xmas at Municipal Auditorium.

Also watched Faith No More open up for the Chili Peppers at Storyville Jazz Hall.

Garbage. That's the only one I can think of.

ETA:

They did 2 shows as co-headliner with Smashing Pumpkins on their first tour... but other than that they were the headliner their entire first time around.

I believe Tool opened up for Fishbone, Rollins Band, and Helmet when they started off.

Wiki says otherwise. 50 support shows on their first tour.
