A mind is a terrible thing to waste is an old maxim. To you the NKs don't have one operating in the nation.

"It's not a lie if YOU believe it." - George Costanza

The Kims probably even think/thought they were gods.

They do not think their leaders are "gods" nor do they worship them in the same manner as the western mind interprets god and worship. There is no official state dogma from the North Koreans that the Kim family is somehow divine. In short, the North Korean people do not follow their leaders in the same manner Christians follow Jesus or Muslims follow Allah. Their devotion is more akin to the Germans following Hitler, only they're even more extreme in their devotion than was the average German to Hitler.

I wouldn't exactly call Park Chung Hee's reforms "free market." Forced urban relocation, tremendous government investment, and loads of foreign aid from the U.S. are indicators of a top-down approach to reform, similar to those found throughout the Tiger countries.

i noticed that as well

do we forget that south korea was a military dictatorship until 1988?

LINK

go to 2m30s into that video

at 3m they even raise their arms in the air and say "We praise you, We praise you!" just like people in Christian churches do.

I'm sure you'll make some lame arse semantic arguments about how they don't really think of the Kims as gods, but you're wrong and you're a fricking disingenuous asshat if you attempt to promote otherwise.

I am at the office and blocked from Youtube but I've seen the footage from his funeral. Their devotion to him something the Western mind cannot really comprehend because we simply lack any real comparative example, thus the common misconception that they think he's their "god". Their devotion to him is much like what someone would give to their god, be they Christian, Muslim, or any other religion. But it is different in that they give this devotion to someone they fully know is a mortal human being and not a god. We have gods, they have their leader and their state.

you really need to educate yourself.

not only is their "president" a dead man, but their most recent dead dear leader was said to have been born on a sacred mountain, his birth foretold by a swallow, heralded by the appearance of a double rainbow, and a new star was created.

LOL. The only thing more sad than a fool is a fool who's too stupid to know what he is. The most sure fire way to identify someone like this is when confronted with a differing opinion they resort to petty insults.

Yes, their devotion to their leaders is like what others would have for their deity, whatever god they worship. But what they are doing is different. They are not devoting themselves to a god or a religion. They are devoting themselves to their leader and the state. They know he is not a God. He is their leader.

Look no further than the fact that there are a handful of Christian churches and Buddhist temples. In fact Kim Jong Il himself had a Eastern Orthodox church built in Pyongyang in 2006. Now if a state really were brainwashing their people that their leaders were "gods" would these things go on? Of course not. The truth is that the state does not teach the Kims are divine nor is there a religion devoted to them. Their devotion is political, not religious.

I understand how it sounds similar to you but it is different. Like i said before, their devotion to the Kims and the state is something we simply do not have an equal example of in the Western mindset. The closest thing would be to compare the most die hard Nazi followers to Hitler. They fully realize the person they are devoted to is a mortal human, but they're still just as devoted to them as though they were a god.

this comes down to you playing semantics in order to differentiate what you consider a true religion to what these people are doing. nothing more, nothing less.

On the contrary, I was simply giving a better example of what is going on in North Korea. Their devotion is not to someone they think is a god. Rather their devotion is political in the same manner as the German's follow Hitler. Yes their devotion is more absolute but this is because they communists have been in power so long as to totally indoctrinate the entire country for generations. There is a difference between religion and politics. To ignore this is to grossly oversimplify both.

I do find it interesting and quite telling that you and even more so Wiki are so defensive when it comes to trying to tie religion to what is going on in North Korea. It's as though there was some anti-religious sentiment that is clouding objectivity here.
