Pat Benatar appreciation thread
Posted by LSUgusto on 1/27/13 at 7:21 pm00
I grew up in the sticks where rock-n-roll was "the devil's music." So, Pat Benatar was as about as hard a music I could catch on the radio.
She was my celebrity crush. While I was at LSU, she played at the Texas Club, so I had to go see. When she came out, I could not wipe the smile off my face. She was sexy. She was tough. And her vocals were as angelic as they were raw.
Her music sounds pretty 80s, these days. But, I hope her legacy remembers her for being the opera singer turned true rock babe. She was once asked "What's the difference between you and Joan Jett?" She replied, "Joan talks tough. I'll kick your arse."

Still one of the most incredible live performers on the planet.
I like the original version of Outlaw Blues from 1979 which appears on her greatest hits (was released wide on Tropico - but a different version).
She had a really great album that came out right when grunge music hit and it got lost in the shuffle. She had some songs late in her career that were incredible that nobody ever heard, including:
Pat Benatar - Everybody Lay Down (LIVE 1993)
Another one of my faves... This was recorded fairly recently...
"Stay Together" Live A&E Acousitc Session
My favorite when it comes to crazy vocal range, though...
We Live For Love - Live in Hartford 1982
We Live for love... 20ish years later (2001 - LIVE)
ETA:
I've got her box set... It's well worth picking up.

I'm all over again.
Man, her range and strength/quality at those highs and lows is just incredible.

Saw her at the Centroplex in the very early '80's and was practically leaning on the stage during the show. PB could wear some spandex.

The only reason she is not universally recognized as the female counter to Freddie Mercury, purely from a vocals standpoint, is Ann Wilson. And that argument can go back and forth all day - Pat's vocals were very powerful and clear, and she, of course had more upper range, while Ann could get into a lower register and do the folk/blues/rock hybrid stuff a little more convincingly - but those 2, for me, are tops for female rock singers from a talent/delivery/quality/power standpoint.

Loved her first album. pretty blah about everything else. Outstanding voice, though.

Agree with everything you just said. The fact that both women can still belt it out today is a blessing.

Think I was at this show as well. Great venue to see her in. The songs and music sounded just like the originals. And, yes, like another poster mentioned, I was grinning from ear to ear the whole time.
BTW, she's playing Beau Rivage (I think?) in April. Definitely considering taking the wife to check her out.

Pat Benatar eclipses Joan Jett in the vocals department. But Joan Jett is a proverbial "nuclear rock-n-roll weapon" compared to Pat Benatar. Benatar has ten times the vocal talent but Joan is pure energy, grit , and determination. I've always loved her vocals on "Shadows of the Night" in particular, but Joan would kick her arse.
