The same people will trash Gladiator and suck off Braveheart. They're like the same damn movie. I honestly think Gladiator is slightly better and I love Braveheart.

The Gladiator wasn't very good. The backstory was mediocre. the action was hard to see with the camera moving so much. There was no sense of drama or that Maximus would die early or was in any real danger. And he was almost like a superhero.

The friendship plot was not developed enough with the fellow slaves and his becoming their leader was poorly done. There was no one to challenge him as the leader, he is just made it.

Troy was not very good either, but I don't want to get into its Achilles' heel.

Braveheart story was more developed.

Definitely better than Phoenix was in Gladiator. Phoenix character just wasn't menacing. He was a whiny, spoiled little wimp.

i'm glad I don't get this analytical when enjoying a movie. not saying there is anything wrong with it but it seems like movie viewing would be a miserable experience.

Diane Kruger getting naked (again) in Troy made it a great movie in my book.

I normally don't do this the first time I see a movie. Upon subsequent viewings, I try to analyze the movie to see what works and what doesn't.

Film and Media Arts is my degree field. I have to study film for classes. Gladiator was actually one of the films we had to watch and then do a write up of why we did or didn't like it and give reasons for each.

The previous post was the main point of my writeup.

I think Troy could be done better. Like someone said, less shiny. Make Achilles more relatable. I don't know.

Of course Russell Crowe is not going to die early on in a 2+ hour movie where he is the lead....What movie kills off the lead role early on?

I think it is realistic to believe that a general in a Roman Army will natural become a leader of a group of slaves/peasents/ criminals

Also, Pheonix played the part of a sick/twisted ruler perfectly. He was supposed to be whimpy...

Better question is: Why did "Gladiator" work and "Robin Hood" didn't?

Not the point. It seemed like he was never in any danger. He was almost a superhero in the movie.

I think when you have a trained Roman war hero fighting slaves and criminals he would look pretty unstoppable

It was a long movie, they developed their friendship pretty well IMO, and when you're fighting for your life every day your going to grow close to the guys you're fighting a long side with
As far as him becoming their leader, he was a leader of the Roman military, and easily the best fighter in the group; if they wanted to live it was in their best interest to follow him, makes perfect sense to me

He was in plenty of danger, he had to kill or be killed in multiple occasions. Of course we all knew he was going to come out victorious because he is the lead role and there was still too much time remaining in the film. No lead role is ever in any real danger of death until the end of a movie.

This one's easy. Because Robin Hood was complete shite.

unless they rope-a-dope you by advertising the movie as a vehicle for a star that dies right at the beginning like with Executive Decision and Steven Segal.
