Owls In Backyard

We have had two owls in our backyard for the past couple months. Almost everyday they have been waking me up around 1:30am "hooting." It's actually pretty awesome. It only lasts for 15 minutes and then I guess they wonder off to hunt. I stuck my head out the back door one night and listened to them for a minute. It sounded so far away, but they were about 60 yards from the house.

I have owls around me. I hear them all the time, rarely see them. Sometimes it's hooting. Sometimes it sounds like a squatch howling.

I actually got to see them flying right at dusk. Scared the crap out of me. They were huge, I felt like I was being hunted.

One time when I was young, the lady that lived behind my house called me because she got scared when she heard an owl in the backyard. It was really close in a tree and i was amazed at how big it was

We live on about 200 acres of land have all kinds of owls around the house...
Once in a great while, usually at dusk, one will buzz you at about 50mph and ten feet off the ground and scare the ever living crap out of you.
Hear their calls all the time.

We had part of a tree fall in our backyard one time. Wife and I got home and went to let the dogs out. There was one small owl sitting at the back door. Then we saw five others throughout the backyard just sitting there looking around. There was apparently a nest in the tree and somehow they all survived the fall!

I have screech owls in my yard in Lafayette.
Plenty of cover provided by the old water oaks and lots of squirrels for a food source.

They are all around my house. I bought a barrel owl call so we could chat in the evenings.

They're cool little dudes, but they won't tackle a squirrel. They're after your mice, voles, and other small varmints.

I wish they would come out during the day to get these damn chipmunks I got.

They'll get them early in the morning and at dusk sometimes. I think some owls actually hunt quite a bit during the day.

I wish they would pick up cats.

A Great Horned owl will destroy a cat. They also eat a lot of skunks. I think Barred owls will kill cats sometimes too, but the GHO's mean business.

Beg your pardon, but I have seen owls catch or nail squirrels on more than one ocassion, and it really is awsome to watch them in flight, coming in feet first and nailing a squirrel..

You haven't seen screech owls do it, which was what we were talking about.
A small-average grey squirrel outweighs the largest screech owl 2-1. Squirrels are formidable prey for our largest raptors. Screech owls can't handle them.
