re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

I can't really disagree with anything you are saying, but I tend to believe that the American society and culture is not any more degenerate than it was 100 years ago. People's perception of morals have changed as well as their way of measuring/judging them. The threat of the trashiness to society is no more severe than it was 500 years ago. The trashiness of society just manifests itself differently to every generation.

I feel like humans instinctively put labels on things/issues as a way to rationalize their own place in society. Humans will always put a label on something that is supposedly ruining our society. It is along the same lines as every generation feeling as though the next generation is gonna mess things up.

It reminds me of the movie Memento. People need meaning in their lives and I believe sounding the alarm about the decay of society is one that is innate in all of us. A tool that helps us survive. Whether the threat is real or imagined, it is good that people question society and its accepted norms. It is what helps the human race to persevere.

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

Case in point, years ago when you said "Matt Flynn sucks more cock than Jenna Jameson" or the time you were all giddy because some dirtbag took pictures of Erin Andrews naked. Now I wanted to see those pics that night you were screaming it all over the OT too, but I resisted the urge to violate her privacy. I would NEVER expect you to understand why I resisted the urge to look at those pictures. In fact, I'm sure it would be impossible for you to understand without falling back on a Beavis-level gay insult. Maybe some day if you are a parent,or trade in your INTERNET BOARD GLIBNESS FOR SOME ACTUAL HUMAN WISDOM, you will seek to lift yourself out of the backyard cesspool and nourish your soul too.

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

quote:

"Openess about sex" is just an empty phrase.

not really

quote:

.I guess in your mind "open" is a vague word that can mean anything you want,

no i mean being open about sex, sexuality, nudity, and accepting it as a part of life

quote:

and "closed" is like a crown you can place on the head of those you can't honestly debate

no. that means hiding sex and making it seem dirty and bad. not getting into details, options, etc

quote:

One can be honest about human sexuality and enjoy shagging one's wife, without celebrating the cultural inanity that is American Porn

there is nothing wrong with porn. porn is great. porn should be celebrated

quote:

.It is possible to object to it for reasons of general INTELLIGENCE

how can you argue against porn?

quote:

and it's popularity doesn't magically confer some kind of Wisdom upon it,

wisdom? it's a tool. a simple tool. who is saying porn is wise?

quote:

American Culture has strangely and inexplicably elevated the Profane to the Sacred

pushing the envelope has always been part of modern culture. is archie bunker a new show? george carlin was popular in the 70s.

quote:

The most elementary, basest human function is intertwined with American Celebrity Culture

what are you talking about?

I'm still wondering where this is supposed to tie in with the topic. Are you suggesting that as "long as murder rates stay down, who cares about our culture?"

i got banned for that. i don't know what you're whining about

quote:

or the time you were all giddy because some dirtbag took pictures of Erin Andrews naked.

i think you're mistaken b/c EA is no big deal to me and i'm known for not being a huge fanboy of her's

quote:

I would NEVER expect you to understand why I resisted the urge to look at those pictures. In fact, I'm sure it would be impossible for you to understand without falling back on a Beavis-level gay insult.

insult? my concept of privacy isn't like most people's sense of privacy. i'm ahead of the curve

privacy is going to be a completely different concept in a generation than it is to mine even

i understand everything. i'm objective. i just don't get caught up in an emotional mindset of ideals (that never existed)

quote:

Maybe some day if you are a parent,or trade in your INTERNET BOARD GLIBNESS FOR SOME ACTUAL HUMAN WISDOM,

one in the same

quote:

you will seek to lift yourself out of the backyard cesspool and nourish your soul too.

how is my soul not nourished?

maybe one day you'll learn to stop thinking emotionally and learn to think logically and rationally

i think killing and raping people is a good sign of a culture's status. why don't you?

quote:

Are you suggesting that as "long as murder rates stay down, who cares about our culture?"

i'm suggesting that if we were morally bankrupt as a society we'd kill each other pretty often

*ETA: what about teen pregnancy? that involves SEX...the biggest problem issue of the socially conservative

A growing economy, ie., alleviation of scarcity and a variety of first and higher order goods through division of labor, is not a cultural artifact but a result of natural human action when not interfered with.

You get back to the Kardashians and the Kardashian Twitter and The Kardashian Porn, and I'll stick to rolling my eyes at the giant farce that is American Culture. I've read Kafka, I just never expected to live Kafka...

huh?

i don't follow any kardashian on twitter and i've seen maybe 15 minutes of all of their shows combined

i've seen like 1 minute of the ray j/kk porn

quote:

and I'll stick to rolling my eyes at the giant farce that is American Culture.

what about it?

i got into an argument about individualism last week and i'll make it here

what's wrong with people having their own voice?

what's wrong with increasing creative outlets for individuals?

what's wrong with exploring and discovering what you enjoy doing (without harming other), and having the ability to speak about it openly and find others who enjoy non-normal things with you?

what's wrong with having the OPTION of instant, free research of almost any topic?

what's wrong with having the OPTION of live-time news media?

what's wrong with connecting with celebrities on a personal level?

what's wrong with connecting with new people you don't know and have never met on a personal level?

shit's awesome. society is awesome. just look at all the great things that are happening around your eyes and stop freaking out b/c it shakes your expectations of life. think about when you'd rather live

most kids my age assume the 80s/90s were awesome. they weren't. they sucked. they were basically the worst time to live in America

the 70s were close to the 80s/90s, but weren't quite as bad

once you get past the 70s you face a real step back in standard of living, and that's a big worry

this is the greatest point in humanity and we are the best country/culture in the history of earth. people need to realize this and embrace it

re: Our increasingly trashy American culture

quote:

A growing economy

That's not what I'm talking about, I'm talking about when growing the economy overrides all other considerations, when hyper-consumption is the norm, when the only thing that matters is increasing shareholder value.

Growing the economy for its own sake should not be an end goal, but rather a means to an end.

It's an obsession in an obsessive compulsive culture.

Porn Stars are metally healthy!

quote:

Female porn stars are psychologically as healthy or healthier than other women, according to a new study, which challenges widely held views about women in the adult entertainment business.

Adult entertainers were found to have higher self-esteem, a better quality of life and body image, and to be more positive, with greater levels of spirituality. They also had higher levels of sexual satisfaction and, perhaps unsurprisingly, many more partners than other women.

Please. Generation after generation has had the exact same gripe in America since the 19th Century. Guess what. The world keeps spinning and kids will be kids. Then they grow up. Keep your chin up, homeslice.

Wow.I would address the Straw Man at the center of that "argument" but I can't get through the perimeter of Straw Men guarding the Iron Fortress of Strawmen encirling the inner sanctum of Strawmen.

well if you want to define a very limited definition of culture and society so that you can feel like you're right, then that's your prerogative. again, try to remove emotional judgments and increase your objective/rational judgments
