I'd think Romeo's been the front runner but Payton didn't want to pull the trigger without accessing some "wild cards" first.

Being that this is CSP's 4th DC hire since 06 I think he wants a very safe pick. I don't think there is a safer hire out there to run the 3-4 than RC.

That's what I'm thinking. If you think about it, Spags came out last off season as a hot commodity, and while he did have DC experience and success, it wasn't over a long period of time. He was coming off a head coaching gig, and while he did input in to the defense, he had much more on his plate than that.

While I think we could have had eventual success with him, we were miscast in our personnel for his system, especially the secondary, which is filled with a bunch of man cover guys.

This is what concerns me going forward. I don't know much about Crennel other that he's had success and he runs a 3-4. I think, for immediate success, we need to be running a predominately man scheme.

I'm the same way. I'd prefer Tomsula, but I would be ok with Crennel. I hope if it's either of them, they bring along a good assistant that could take over in a couple over years. Let's face it, Crennel is one muffaletta away from a heart attack, and if Tomsula can take the worst defense in NFL history, and turn them into something average, he's gone for a HC job after a year or so.

just commenting on the history here...

Vitt, offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, special teams coach Greg McMahon, tight ends coach Terry Malone and strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple are the only coaches left from the 2006 staff.

When other teams want your guys you are doing it right. Three head coaches from your staff (Marrone in Buffalo, Allen in Oakland, & Johnson at Tulane) in 6 years in pretty impressive.

Big shoes for a new OL coach with Marrone on to HC and Kromer on to OC as the standard.

"It boils down to the players (to run a 3-4)," Tomsula said last week. "It does. Obviously, the Saints are talented. That's a talented team. They've got some good players. They're going to bounce back. You've got Sean Payton, and the rest of the staff, Joe Vitt. That thing is going to be fine."

Impressive history of SF defense since Tomsula-

Maybe mentioned before but another impressive fact: He has been retained as D Line Coach under 3 different coaches/regime changes. That shows that he is impressive and respected as well as being able to get along with varied personalities and styles.

One more... NT Sopoaga is a UFA. He's not all world but he won't be a bank breaker either. He might like heading to the Big Easy with Tomsula if he is the one. Like how Spags brought Chamberlain and that DB from STL (Marques Johnson?).

I've said before, the first three calls I'd probably make would be Romeo Crennel, Keith Butler and Mike Singletary.

That being said, I wouldn't be upset with a Tomsula hire either. To me, a Butler, Singletary or Tomsula hire is kind of like a Sean Payton hire. Young coordinator looking to make his chops in the world.

Up here in KC, it's been said Romeo would be an idiot to return to coaching if he can sit and make something like 7 million the next 2 years- comments?

If he wants to continue coaching in the NFL, you don't want to disappear for 2 years. He's getting paid regardless and can structure a contract a little more backloaded in years past 2 year to make it worth while.

there's a thread about the Schefter blurb on Rob Ryan. If that's it so be it.

More interesting to me is that we know positively that Grantham is in the mix. Since he's in for an interview Thursday here's more on him-

Todd Grantham

Virginia Tech (1990-1995)
Grantham spent six seasons at his alma mater, Virginia Tech, the final two as defensive line coach. In 1995, the Hokies ranked first nationally in rushing defense, fifth in scoring defense and 10th in total defense. Virginia Tech racked up 50 sacks en route to the Big East title and a Sugar Bowl triumph over Texas. Grantham coached defensive ends and inside linebackers from 1990–91 and defensive tackles from 1992-93.
Michigan State (1996-1998)
Grantham then served three seasons as the defensive line coach at Michigan State. He added the title of assistant head coach in his final season in East Lansing in 1998. Michigan State ranked 19th in total defense in 1996 and 13th in 1997, making consecutive bowl trips.
Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001)
Grantham was hired by Jim Mora in 1998 to coach the Defensive Line. His D-Line was one of the catalysts of the biggest turnaround in league history (3-13 to 13-3), ultimately helping the Colts defense compile 56 sacks in two years, which was a club record since moving to Indianapolis. During his tenure in Indianapolis, the Colts had a 29-19 record.
Houston Texans (2002-2004)
After Jim Mora was relieved of his duties in Indianapolis, Grantham would move on to the newly formed Houston Texans, joining the staff of former Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Coordinator and Inaugural Carolina Panthers head coach Dom Capers. Grantham would be given lots of talent to work with from the start, as the Texans acquired Pro Bowl Defensive End Gary Walker and Nose Tackle Seth Payne from the Jacksonville Jaguars in the expansion draft.
In 2002, his influence was evident on the line as starters Gary Walker, Seth Payne, and Jerry Deloach all posted career high's in tackles. Gary Walker would also earn his second Pro Bowl appearance under his tutelage that season.
2003 would be a testing year for the line, as Pro Bowler Gary Walker and Seth Payne would only play in a combined six games that year due to injury. However, Jerry Deloach and Steve Martin would fill in with great success, posting a combined 201 tackles. Despite the very poor 5-11 record, there was optimism for the future of the steadily improving defense.
2004 would be a break-out year for the Texans. Todd Grantham's line would once again make a major contribution, helping the Texans achieve the 13th ranked run defense in the league. Despite the low number of sacks (5.5), they put great pressure on opposing quarterbacks (76 recorded pressures) and helped anchor the defense that was equipped with playmakers such as 2004 1st round draft pick Dunta Robinson, former Ravens Linebacker Jamie Sharper, and Veteran Defensive Backs Aaron Glenn and Marcus Coleman. Despite posting a mediocre 7-9 record, the Texans were poised to start making an impact in the NFL after improving every season since their inception in 2002.
After three strong seasons with the Texans, Todd Grantham would accept an offer by Romeo Crennel to become Defensive Coordinator of the Browns. After he left, the Houston Texans would fall apart as they posted a 2-14 record. Dom Capers was fired after the end of the season.

Grantham part 2 as a Defensive Coordinator

Cleveland Browns (2005-2007)
Todd Grantham's first year as coordinator of the Browns defense was an eclectic mix of good and bad. They once again fielded one of the NFL's top pass defenses, actually stepping up in rank from 5th to 4th in the NFL. When starting cornerback Gary Baxter went down with a knee injury that ended his season, Leigh Bodden emerged as a solid playmaker. Overall, their secondary continued to play at a high level. They also ranked 11th in scoring defense despite possessing one of the leagues worst run defenses. Orpheus Roye would post a career high with 88 tackles and also make 3 sacks.
He was fired on January 11, 2008 after the 2007 season with the Brown's defense ranking 25th against the pass, 27th against the run, and 30th in total-yards-against among 32 teams.
Dallas Cowboys (2008-2009)
Grantham served as the defensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys until the end of the season when he joined the coaching staff at the University of Georgia as defensive coordinator. During Grantham's 2 seasons with Dallas, the Cowboys improved from 13th (2007) to 2nd (2009) in the league in points allowed.[3]
Georgia Bulldogs (2010-present)
Grantham has installed a 3-4 defense. Despite breakdowns in coverage at times, the Bulldogs ranked 23rd nationally in total defense and 35th in scoring defense (22 points allowed per game). His defense also forced 26 takeaways, over twice as many as Georgia had in 2009 (12), and helped them move from 118th nationally in 2009 to 18th in 2010 in turnover margin.
Georgia's defense under Grantham finished the 2011 season ranked 3rd nationally in total defense, 7th in pass defense and 9th in rush defense. They also finished 2nd in the SEC in sacks (34), tackles for loss (94) and turnovers forced (29). In 2012, despite falling to 27th nationally in total defense, the unit was revered as one of the top in the country as the team finished the season 12-2, winning the Eastern Division of the SEC. Grantham's defense sported some of the top talent in the country with playmakers at every position including linebackers Jarvis Jones and Alec Ogletree, defensive linemen John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers, cornerback Sanders Commings, and All-American free safety Bacarri Rambo. Jones was Grantham's star player and was once again a consensus All-American in 2012, finishing the regular season leading the nation in tackles for loss, and 3rd in sacks.

If nothing else they oughta get the low down from him on Jarvis Jones, John Jenkins, Bacarri Rambo, and Kwame Geathers who all have been in Saints draft discussions.

already questioned in the Ryan thread

Could be, maybe even likely, but Grantham wouldn't be coming in if it was a done deal

Grantham is overrated. Georgia had as much talent as anyone on defense and was terrible.

don't know if this has already been discussed, but i figured romeo was going to be a long shot after this was reported:

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Crennel will be paid $3.5 million in each of the next two years not to coach the Chiefs.

This report comes under the context of the Saints reportedly interested in Crennel. His contract is off set which means whatever the Saints pay him just reduces the number the Chiefs owe him. He wouldn't earn any more money to coach the Saints. LINK

FYI:
CSP said this morning on Mike & Mile that its been reported that Rob Ryan will be the new DC and he is coming in for an interview this week, but they are interviewing a few guys this week and hope to have a decision next week. Also said that you have to ask permission to interview a position coach and they are waiting on responses to those requests.

Well, just based on Blues' info, Grantham sounds like a better hire than Ryan.

related per rotoworld:

CBS' Jason La Canfora "continues to hear" Georgia DC Todd Grantham could accept the same position with the Eagles.
Grantham was the early favorite to serve as Chip Kelly's defensive boss, but NFL.com's Albert Breer reported on January 21 the Eagles were "(planning to stay) in the NFL" when hiring a coordinator. Grantham hasn't been directly linked to the Eagles in nearly three weeks. Grantham — a 3-4 specialist — will reportedly interview for the Saints' DC job on Thursday.

I'll be honest. I would not be all that excited about Rob Ryan. In fact, I think it's almost a step down from Sags. (and y'all know I wasn't a fan of him) I'd rather have a young up and comer than a media hogging re-tread.
