Pace Setters
Stetson Hatters
(My two faves)

Fighting Irish
Minutemen
Longhorns
Sooners
Razorbacks
Wolverines
Aztecs
Ragin' Cajuns (yes it's tempting to hate on this b/c of all the University of Looziana douches -- but it's a great name)

Unfortunately many of the great Indian mascots have been killed off

Gators (homer pick)

Mascot has a girlfriend and is found on campus, wild, in its natural habitat. And it's unique (not a bulldog, tiger, etc)

I'm partial to any nickname that has a tie in with the culture of the area it represents.

Ex:

Longhorns, Sooners, Ragin Cajuns, etc... I've also always like Fighting Irish.

Generic animals(Tigers, Wildcats, Bulldogs) are the worst, IMO

From the Georgetown website:

quote:

Many years ago, when all Georgetown students were required to study Greek and Latin, the University's teams were nicknamed "The Stonewalls." It is suggested that a student, using Greek and Latin terms, started the cheer "Hoya Saxa!", which translates into "What Rocks!" The name proved popular and the term "Hoyas" was eventually adopted for all Georgetown teams.

Note they say "it is suggested". Even they don't know what a Hoya is.

LSU Fighting Tigers comes from an army unit in the civil war -- as does Michigan Wolverines

Still, Tigers is the most generic nickname out there.

I actually knew that about LSU, doesn't make it any less boring.
I don't know of any other colleges that use Wolverines so they are fine in my book.

The NCAA forced the University of North Dakota to abandon their "Fighting Sioux" nickname. They currently have no nickname.

One of the new nicknames that many students are petitioning for is the "Lawyers." Care to guess why?

You got me. But I don't see any colleges names the Fighting Ostriches. That would be unique!

LSU should be the Fighting Tigers or Bayou Bengals. Auburn should simply be the War Eagles.

Let Georgia, Miss. St, Mizzou, etc be generic

Did the Sioux fight UND on their nickname? It wouldn't surprise me if they did.
