The feeling must be, our defense is awful, we have tried multiple coordinators, we have tried different free agents, yet nothing seems to improve. So, if we have to completely rebuild the defense from the ground up what kind of defense do we want to build? Obviously, the answer was a 3-4. As fans we must realize this is defense is still going to suck next year and might suck for a couple of years. It would have sucked even if we stuck with the 4-3 because the real issue is building a new defense through personnel and building a core of players that consistently make plays.

Guarantee that's not Payton's expectation for the defense, even in 2013, so don't see why it should be mine either. I don't expect to be elite over the next couple of years but the defense should be middle of the pack in the NFL with a talent overhaul this off season.

It's generally quicker to re-build for a 3-4 than a 4-3 imo

If they find the right pieces to fill into a few of the holes on the roster they could be a competent enough defense next year, with improvement going forward after that.

I don't get the whole "Spags is a good DC" bit. He was good for 2 years with the Giants. They have been one of the best defenses before and after he was there. And that was the only place in the league he was a coordinator.

Exactly, we're not expecting for an elite defense to come out that tunnel next year. We are Super Bowl contenders w/ an average defense. We contend if we are anywhere between 15-22.

Rob Ryan is off the table. He's been hired by another team.

Giants D was actually pretty bad in '06(24th in pts allowed, 25th in yards allowed). They were above average in '07 then out of their minds in the playoffs.

Most DCs are good when you have an elite front four that can get pressure and you can drop 7 guys in coverage, as the case w/ the Giants. That's every coordinators wet dream. Also, I'm sure he had a heavy hand in St. Louis's defense and they weren't impressive. Like I've been saying, he's fool gold.

He seems like a stand up guy. I hope the best for him and I hope he lands on his feet and gets another opportunity. He was put in a shitty situation, but he also did a shitty job. Payton canned Spags on the 2nd day back on the job, thats saying something.

Well, to be fair, he had to do it as soon as he got back, we are behind everyone else in that regard; Goodell has already fricked us early in this offseason. Maybe could've had a guy like Rob Ryan if we had more time.

7th in total yards, but just avg in ppg 16th. They did play out of their minds in the playoffs.

Like I said, he had one of the best front fours. If they won on 1st and 2nd downs or created passing downs it was game over. I think it was more do to the talent then the coaching.

I do think Spags was at least a good evaluator of talent.

Your better argument is the 2008 Giants Defense. Most ppl don't remember they were 12-4 and had the # 1 seed, but lost to Carolina in the divisional round. That was Spags best defensive coaching yr. I think they were Top 5 in yardage and ppg.

I must say I'm surprised by the firing. My friends are all happy now. We figured out during the year that this def was going to be a work in progress for longer than we hoped under spags. I figured we'd see one more year from him.

Not complaining at all, just surprised.

Switching to a 3-4 is just the type of jump start this team needs. When you finish worst in nfl history, you'll take anything you can get to motivate your players.

My hats of to CSP.

He may have been. We didn't spend enough time with him to find out. I think he was weak at making in game adjustments.

My only hope is we can get this defense working properly before that fricking window closes.
