| Who's the better director RIGHT NOW? (Posted on 1/23/13 at 4:37 pm)
Christopher Nolan or Quentin Tarantino IMO I would go with Nolan. I like his batman series of course and think he did a great job with Inception and I think he'll do really well with Man of Steel. I've yet to see Django Unchained but I am just not that big of a fan of Taratino.

Nolan writes characters Tarantino writes one dimensional stereotypes Not bashing Tarantino and I'm not a Nolan fanboy.

QT His scripts are amazing and he ALWAYS delivers. Love how he mixes it up between crime, war, western, etc. Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Basterds, Django are effing incredible. Nolan is great, but the Batman series hurts him imo. Dialogue was cheesy as shite and TDKR's ending was lazy. Aside from the Batman trilogy, Nolan is a beast. Memento, Prestige, Inception are all FANTASTIC and his new movie could be the best of them, potentially.

They're just superhero movies, and they're better than any others that have been made. TDK is awesome Inglourious Basterds is my favorite b/w both directors

Coen Bros. It's hard to say between those two. Tarantino has a deeper resume but if you just take both directors top three films, Nolan has definitely got an argument. Memento and The Prestige are just crazy good. Both could retire right now and be two of my favorites. I think Nolan has 6 truly great movies and Tarantino has 6 truly great movies. This posts makes no sense as regards to picking a favorite.

Two of my favorite directors. Both are at the top of their game now, and both have a great body of work. I can't think of a bad movie that either one has directed; Insomnia maybe, but I'm in the minority in disliking it. My favorite movie between the two is Inglorious Basterds (yes, I prefer it to Pulp Fiction; call me crazy). All things considered, though, I'd probably favor Nolan. Barely. . . You can't go wrong with either one.

I prefer Nolan's movies. QT is alright, but I've never been a huge fan. I'd take The Prestige or Inception over any of Tarantino's movies.

The nerd in me can't help but love Nolan. His newest picture is going to be awesome sons:
quote:
According to Deadline, Nolan is taking the script that his brother wrote, and combining it with his own original idea, and writing a new script (the movie will retain the title). Thorne is still on board as a technical consultant. As for the exact story, yesterday it was said that it will follow a group of explorers who go through a wormhole, in a story about time travel and alternate dimensions. While today, things are a bit more vague, as stating it will "depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the farthest borders of our scientific understanding."

and I think he'll do really well with Man of Steel.
You do know he didn't direct Man of Steel, right? I'm going Nolan because Tarantino is an overrated hack while Nolan is an overrated talent. Nolan does so much with pacing, structure, and the actual elements of directing it is incomprehensible when compared to Tarantino, who more or less does what he thinks looks cool, by his own admission. I've enjoyed a Tarantino movie here and there. His homages to anime and old samurai flicks in Kill Bill are fun to watch. The way he shoots violence in general is fun to watch. But Pulp Fiction was a mess structurally (and I like Pulp Fiction) as was Inglorious Basterds, which was really only saved by Christoph Waltz from being a very mediocre film, at best. As for writing, I prefer Nolan's story structure and depth of character to Tarantino's witty banter, which is really all Tarantino concerns himself with. Bottom line is this: Tarantino makes movies that he thinks are cool visually or cool in terms of dialogue; Nolan makes movies that are visually well done, build upon themselves, have structures that are informed by the subject matter of the material, and explore humanity and (most often) the human need for love. There is nothing wrong with Tarantino's approach, but he is not a great director, nor is he a great writer. His films are for entertainment purposes only.

QT is unquestionably the better writer but I'd give the directing edge to Nolan.
