Considering starting duck hunting

i like being outdoors, hunting, and the taste of duck.
what do i need? a lab, i guess. what are the essentials?
the hardest part to me is how in the hell yall identify the species and gender before you shoot it. i hear it can be costly to ground check waterfowl
i've never duck hunted before, even though i have access to some good duck hunting land (stuttgart, ar)

All you need is access to a good spot. If you have that there are many that will supply you with all the other things as long as you bring them along.

Hunt with a friend in borrowed gear first. It can get expensive once you get into it. Trained dog, go devil, blinds, waders, nice shotgun, etc.

Don't start. It's addicting, really, really, really addicting. All of your money and time from September through January will be devoted to missing flying birds. Just don't do it.

You will need $$ if you want to do it right.

you dont need a lot of money, just a good hunting spot.

book a guided hunt, see if you like it
lots of fun, but also lots of money. lots of work, lots of time, lots of being in awful weather conditions, lots of early waking up, lots of frustration on the bad days

1st two things is a decent shotgun and a spot that ducks like to frequent.

For equipment, gun, shells, camo, calls, waders/hip boots, and a dozen or two of decent decoys. 6 mallards, 6 woodies, some teal.
A good blind or hole in some public land is 1st thing to find. Then you get your gear together.
Familiarize yourself with pictures of flying ducks. You can tell how each species flys from really high. Teal will buzz you and wood ducks will dive bomb.
Dog isn't really necessary. Boat isn't depending on where you hunt.
Atv is sometimes required

This depends on what you have. I got into it pretty cheap. Minimum of:
Shotgun: $150 870 Express Magnum from a Pawn Shop
Waders: $100
Case of shells: $125
Decoys: $75 for a couple dozen
Duck calls: $50
I assume you have some other camo, if not that will be an added expense. And if you can't walk to your hunting location, you'll need a boat. But honestly, if you have places to hunt, talk to some friends, someone will gladly supply decoys, a dog, and a boat for a chance to hunt.

what do you consider a "decent" shotgun?
i have a semiautomatic remington 12 gauge. its an old hand-me-down

Go with somebody next season. Hunt with someone who knows how to hunt and then you can decide how , or if, you want to gear up.

That is a decent gun. 1100 model?

i believe so. i honestly haven't shot it in forever. its been in the safe.
i think my 12 gauge is a remington and my 16 is a mossberg. that might be backwards though.
i have a shite ton of camo. no waders, just some knee high insulated rubber boots.
no boat, but i do have an atv.
no good land where i live (i could find some though, im sure), but access to land in AR

Go clean it and oil it. Then shoot some skeet
No pun intended

If it shoots consistently without hanging up I would consider it a decent shotgun.

How old? Need to know this to make sure it's ok to shoot steel out of it.

I know it's been said before but scout, scout, scout. Don't get discouraged if you don't see anything at all on a trip, just get out there. Its always nice to have a backup plan or have more than one objective for a new area, like bring some buckshot if its gun season for deer or bring a fishing pole. Don't get pigeonholed into one area either or you'll get discouraged when/if they're not there. Try again somewhere else.
And yes you can do it on the cheap but you will be limited where you can go. There are good spots accessible by foot tho. It will help you to be in good shape.
And don't skimp on the waders.
