And let's not forget that this was FINALLY the more adult, non cartoony Zelda game that everyone had been asking for.

And everyone fricking loved it. So what do they do? Go right back to a 5 year old drawing style for the next one.

But here's the rub, Zelda isn't meant to be a series for adults. The game originated as a game for kids / young adults, and Twilight Princess was far darker than any game in the series.

Leave out a completely different back-story for Link

Aside from direct sequels like Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening, all Zelda games do this. Not bringing anything new to the table.

and the Twilight Realm

Light/Dark World concept was introduced over a decade before . We've seen things like the Twilight Realm done before.

and an entirely new kingdom, and a brand new enemy, and a new princess, and brand new items (spinner, double claw shot).

Dude, you're just not getting it. None of those are new. We've seen Hyrule, new enemies, new princesses, and new items in every damn Zelda game. None of these changed HOW we played the game. The Light/Dark World had never been done before A Link to the Past. How many 3rd person games do not implement the genius targeting system implemented in Ocarina of Time? No one has come close to implementing Majora's Mask gameplay since it was created. These are games that bring something new to the table because how we played the game changed. Adding a ball and chain didnt do this at all. Twilight Princess just wanted to be Ocarina of Time and therefore felt stale, especially with Ganondorf being behind it all again.

Not really. Majora's Mask is far, far darker than TP in basically every way, especially due to its antagonist. Honestly I'd say that portions of Skyward Sword are darker, with Ghirhim being just a step below Majora on the fricked up scale. Remember Ocarina when you first step out of the Temple of Time and see Death Mountain on fire and all the dead people on the square? Twilight Priness tries to start off dark, but it fails at doing so once you free the world of Twilight, and no one besides you and a select few give a damn about what is happening from that place forward.

Being able to switch back and forth between the two instantaneously was a different quirk, plus the "Sense" mode when you were playing as a wolf was a completely new game mechanic. I think you just didn't like the game and are now reaching. No, it didn't reinvent the wheel, but it certainly wasn't a stale entry in the series.

Also, Midna is by far the greatest secondary character in the Zelda series, IMHAHO.

Once you got to the point where you could switch back between Link and the wolf, a whole new game opened up. And even though they weren't that great, first one with motion controls.

At best it did the same thing Majora's Mask did with transformation. And the motion controls were basically optional and added almost nothing to the game (the bow and the Hookshot maybe being the exception). Motion control adding to the game and how to face your enemies wasn't added til Skyward Sword.

This game is kinda proof that gamers don't really know what they're talking about and should leave game design to the pros. Nintendo gave into fan demand, and this is what we got. It was the game we wanted, but not necessarily the game we needed.

I agree with you here, but:

is also reaching..

I loved TP, it's my 3rd favorite in the series:

WW
OoT
TP

but, it still didn't reinvent the wheel in any way, I was pretty disappointed when we finally found out Ganon was behind it all.. was kinda sickening actually.

That's because TP was developed originally for the Gamecube. It wasn't even planned to be a Wii game until the Wii came out. The motion controls were just thrown in. Of course they aren't spectacular. Did Minda touch you in a naughty place or something? You seem very hostile towards anything TP.

I've beaten TP 5 times. I've yet to finish SS, and don't plan to. I know plenty of others who feel the same way.

Their two most successful games were OoT and MM. Both made in the exact same style with dark and serious tones in the story and dark/realistic shading. I'm not sure why people seem to think Zelda needs to go toward a more cartoony style.

Yeah Skyward Sword was a little too bright and cartoonish for me. I prefer the darker more realistic style like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess so I hope they go in that mold.

Majora's Mask would like a word with you.

I hated Wind Waker when it came out and loved Twilight Princess when it came out. That said, I liked the blend between the two they chose for Skyward Sword. Having recently beaten Wind Waker for the first time I also love its art style. It has withstood the test of time magnificently.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone else dislikes it.

Your loss. I don't believe SS is the best Zelda game like all the hype claimed when it launched, but it is still a damn good game and worth finishing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to NOT finish a Zelda game just because I didn't like the art style. I actually ended up beating WW twice. However, the story in SS never grabbed me. In fact, it bored me to tears. Very slow, and I gave it about 10 hours of playing time before I finally just said frick it. Just didn't like it.

I enjoyed Skyward Sword but it's my least favorite Zelda game on console.

That game would have benefited IMMENSELY by making the Sky world vast and explorable ala Wind Waker along with the uber linear earth parts.

I wasn't referring to liking or disliking based on art style. It is a good game as in it has, imo, a good story and is worth finding out how it ends. I'll admit it develops slow.

The linearity and lack of things to do in the sky were my biggest peeves about SS. I didn't really like sailing around in WW, but I hate the constricted feel of SS. Loved the open world in OoT, MM, and TP.

I think you have to throw WW in that group. Yeah, a lot of it was water, but that world was about as open as you can get.

ETA: And at least there was stuff to DO while on the water...*cough*

That's probably what I disliked the most. Yeah the story was slow, but it felt like I was playing Dragon Age 2.

It is kind of in between. Not really an open world like the other three, more like a vast collection of areas spread out that you had to sail to. It wasn't bad, but not the same. It was still better than Skyward Sword. Especially once you got the Ballad of Gales and could port around.
