What is the purpose of the FE Exam?

I am wondering if passage of the FE Exam is required for employment or for applying to take the PE Exam. If it's not required, then why take it? Why not just skip straight to the PE exam?

It's not required for employment but employers will see it as a definite positive and may up your starting compensation by a bit

Eta: unless you are a terrible test taker, the FE shouldn't be much of a challenge

It's pretty hard to study for it

You can get a job without having taken the FE or having your PE but some companies limit your advancement or pay without it in the long run. Depends on your field, but if you're a CE or work for an engineering contractor like Jacobs, I would recommend it. I didnt take the FE because I'm lazy and I don't want to be a lifetime number cruncher. Way more interested in technical management

if you're in CE, i'm assuming you're limited career wise, even in the long run without PE?

I'm in Construction Management so I know I don't need it. I was just thinking about getting tutored up and trying to get a PE certification just because I think I could pass the test if I tried.

It is not required for employment, like a nurse requires Nclex or a Lawyer passing the bar.

It's a step in the process of getting a PE license, which is sought after in the design/consulting engineering industry.

Take it whilst in college. I didn't see the importance if it during college, but took it anyway. Didn't study for it and didn't feel good about my chances of passing, but ended up passing. Took the PE 6 years later and passed it the first time as well. "Yewkindewit!"

You'll possibly not be allowed to take the exam without an ABET accredited engineering degree.

^This

You can't just apply for a FE or PE test without an engineering degree and (in most states) you will need 5 years of relevant experience after passing the FE as a prerequisite to taking the PE.

I think there are still some states that will issue a PE without examination but never heard of one where an engineering degree in the specific discipline is optional. Even then the PE will not transfer via comity to states that require examination.

With a CM degree I would suggest seeking a PMP (Project Management Professional) certification in the future if you are looking for some type of accreditation.

Kingbob, you are obviously in construction management and not in engineering for a reason. I am guessing that it probably has something to do with an aversion to studying. You can do pretty well in construction, the jobs aren’t as stable but you have more potential for earning if you get lucky and work your arse off. But if for some reason you think you want to be a licensed engineer change your major to engineering. You can always do construction with an engineering degree, but you cant do engineering with a construction management degree.

This.

I know a EE that took 6 tries to pass the PE, mostly due to all of the math on the test. I can't speak for the civil or mechanical PE Exams, but it is highly unlikely that a construction manager (or an electrician for that much) is going to waltz in and pass the EE PE. Not saying it couldn't happen, just highly unlikely.

frick off. Engineering ain't for everyone. Don't fault the guy for getting a degree he can do an awful lot with.

Once again, you've got no idea what you're talking about.

And to the OP, I'm embarrassed for you that you thought you could take the FE/PE without an engineering degree. You should know better.

Many of you are wrong on here......

It is 4 years post ABET accredited college degree in engineering under the guidance of a PE and passage of the FE to sit for the PE exam.

I am currently looking to hire a young engineer, but won't even consider someone without the FE.......
