I think Dwight will actually resign with them after this year. Walking away from LA leaves $30mm on the table, that's awfully hard to walk away from.
Ultimately, the Lakers need to move Pau or Dwight, they can't co-exist IMO. Obviously moving Dwight would net a higher return, so I'd lean towards moving him. I think the scenario you pointed out would work out really well for LA (Smith to LA) if they can somehow get assurance that Smith would resign with them

My thinking was that it would also save the Lakers a ton of money this year. Seeing as they aren't going anywhere this year and this group together has been below even mediocre.
Dwight makes about 6.5 more in salary than Smith.
Could be a good salary dump. Obviously other pieces have to be involved to make the trade work.
ETA: Teletovic, Lopez to Atlanta; Howard to Brooklyn works on the dreaded Trade Machine

Hard to find many 18 and 8 24-year-old centers who block 2 shots a game to go along with good percentages from the floor and line.
this is true. probably just jaded by one guy (Joe Johnson) taking up most of the cap room for yrs and never being a superstar or allowing money to go grab anyone else.
of course, I don't really see anyone out there to take the Hawks money anyway, so that may not happen.

Hollinger always would rave about what Horford could do if he actually played his "natural" position, power forward. This would allow the Hawks to move Horford to the 4.
yeah, he'd be better as a 4, and he and Lopez would compliment each other well. team would be more boring, but probably more efficient.
and yet still, no superstar.

Here we go again. This time around, I'm gonna enjoy it
I could see Dwight leaving L.A. (and $30 million) because he doesn't want to be second fiddle to Kobe for several more years. He hates how Kobe puts up 30 shots/game, while he isn't anywhere close to that.
I don't think the Lakers would trade him (expecting him to sign long term this summer), but if they don't like his vibe, this could get interesting.

Lakers are going to be a mess for the next few years. They have a shite ton of cap issues and bad contracts with old as frick players.
And lets not even talk about the disaster that is known as Mike D'Antoni

Dwight is the problem with the Lakers this year.

He's not the problem, but he is a problem.

If Phil was coaching they would be in first place with Twin Towers

Dwight was supposed to protect the rim, he can't. Dwight FT shooting has cost them games, and he's taking touches away from a more talented offensive player.
Again, Dwight is the problem with the Lakers.

Could the Hawks have interest?
As poopy-pants as Smoove has been I'd be up for trading him away before he walks next summer

Kobe is a lock for DPOY. No one else has been able to shut down Dwight like he does

I don't know if they care. The issue with Dwight is, if he goes to a team that has the cap space to sign him outright (Atlanta), Lakers are fricked. They've got $78m in cap space without Howard, so if he leaves without their getting anything in return, they'll be even worse next season, which I'd love to see. And with all this talk of a Pau trade, I really don't know if they can get much of value for him. I know he's being misused, but I'm sure age has a big part in his decline as well. He's not close to being a $19m player.

true, but he sure killed in the Olympics last summer.
Howard's back has taken him down a notch. He may never be the same player, and imo elite athleticism, not his skill set, is what made him great.
