Your right. If we don't do something it will be taken from you through inflation.

Seems like everybody wants it and wants everybody else to pay for it.
Debt per family is > $730,000.00. Why don't we just ask everyone to pay it off?

$732,000.00+/household ! ! !

Hear, hear! When welfare recipients have to WORK for their benefits, when they have to pay for their current FREE taxi cab rides to the post office and grocery store and doctor's office, when they have to pay for the Obama iphones, etc, etc. we will consider our options.

So you think that if we all just give Washington more that they will use it to reduce the debt and not just spend it on additional things?

I'm just trying to promote an enviroment where we can discuss solutions, rather than pointing fingers and whining about what others do or not do.

Inflation - in its most base sense - has and is occurring. I already pay for expansion of the monetary supply. Prices for many goods would be much lower otherwise, given market conditions.

Fortunately, most of my assets are real and not denominated (but can be valued) in terms of dollars.

So your willing to give up what you paid in? That would be a good sacrafice.

I would be willing to forfeit my future SS if I can stop paying now. If DC wants to make SS pay to play, I am all for it. Of course, we know that won't work either.

There will not be a solution. We have crossed the Rubicon.

IF... and I say IF ALL individuals making $25k or more were brought into the federal tax system and had to pay something and I could immediately quit paying SS Taxes and invest into my own retirement.... I would give up what I have paid in and walk away.

That would be my sacrifice

Good enough?

this, collapse is inevitable. Just a matter of when. I think we can kick the can down the road for another 20 years or so.

I'm prett confident what I have paid into ss will never be returned, so basically I have sacrificed 26 yrs worth of ss taxes already. Its time welfare... unemployment.. recipients start sacrificing now. If it takes working at burger king to buy food, then so be it. Too many suck oof the govt and use the govt without any sacrifice at all. They don't NEED their cable.com..cell phones...ipads...itunes and bs like that. When folks start to understand necessity, you might start seeing responsibility.

1. I get a home mortgage interest deduction I could live without.

2. I could prob. afford to pay my healthcare post tax.

3. I could volunteer my time and services at an organization that relies primarily on government funding to reduce need.

4. Assist more in supporting my elderly relatives in order make a public safety net sustainable.

its a spending problem, not a revenue problem. However, as a nation, we are addicted to the current overspending. any big change in spending would crush the economy.

really only way to start is freeze all spending and let inflation/GDP growth slowly catch up with spending

other than that you could get creative with accounting. delay all proposed federal construction projects a few months to a year, pushing projects to another fiscal year's budget. make "cost of living" increases every two years instead of every year.

increase SS retirement age incrementally based on current age, ect

I'm not in debt and I have a positive contibution:use ratio. I think the politicians (and their estate heirs as applicable) who created this mess should bear the majority of the responsibility for fixing it.

I bought a bunch of stuff today.

I can't wait to get to my boss and tell him he must give me more money to pay it.

He'll probably tell me to not spend more money than I have.

I'll let him know that I did not SPEND any money more than I had. He and I are just talking about PAYING for it.

Maybe in your personal budget. I think someone already stated the national debt per houshold. It's alot, and as a country we owe alot more than make.

re: Creating a Debt Free America Pt. 1 - What Will You Sacrafice?

Washington has a spending problem not a revenue problem. Most people I know get up and go to work everyday and live within their means. These same people have no problem with paying a LITTLE more in taxes to help pay down the debt, BUT ONLY IF the government cuts back on spending. We are told we must pay our fair share, but the government continues to spend more money than is coming in via taxes. Neither party wants to touch entitlements, but we aren't asking them to pay their fair share. Shouldn't someone receiving funds from the government also sacrifice a small portion of their government check?

The US post office alone is running multi billions in debt, but heaven forbid we try to fix it. Instead they sponsor a bike rider for $30 million, for a sport that is not even popular in the US, not mention they are a monopoly and receive no added benefit for advertising.

This are the types of things that continue to happen in Washington but no one in Washington is held accountable. Only those of us who don't pay our fair share are called un-patriotic.

The Senate has NOT PASSED a budget since OBAMA has been in office, but it is the taxpayers who are unreasonable. I do not want to hear another word about what sacrifice I would make until the fools in Washington are willing to SACRIFICE their careers to do the right thing.
