It's been 8 years since the last episode of Enterprise and close to 20 years since the last episode of TNG. A lot of possible series adaptations have been proposed, but none have gotten the green light so far.

Bryan Singer and Bryan Fuller proposed Star Trek: Federation, but it was DOA with the new JJ Abrams movies LINK

And Ron Moore of BSG, DS9, Voyager, and TNG has spoken on the subject as well LINK

Jonesing for something new and with the popularity of the Abrams movies a whole new generation of fans is available for the taking. Continuity could be a major problem, but they could work around it or treat the Abrams movies as a separate universe.

They need to decide whether Star Trek is a movie or television franchise. Trying to do both won't work in the long run, IMO.

It's been a TV franchise since '66, and both since '79. Exactly what do you consider the 'long run'?

Yeah, I'd say they work just fine as both, "in the long run".

But is 33 or 34 years really enough time to judge their success? I mean really.

This. It obviously works as both; they just need the right director/producer and a good team of writers to develop a new TV series. There are many possibilities in terms of theme. For instance I could easily see something similar to Serenity with the Borg conquering the Federation and the Enterprise exploring outside the known galaxy eventually finding a way to defeat the Borg in grand finale after 6 or so seasons.

It still holds up pretty well too.

A new series would be great, something WAAAAY into the further future would be different.

I doubt there's any new Star Trek series until after a third movie from Abrams.

My guess is that Paramount would probably see any new series as "watering down" the franchise, and would want to wait until after a third movie (which would probably be the last one Abrams directs, and possibly the last with the current cast).

I just meant that too much Star Trek on TV was a big reason the movie franchise died. I'd prefer they stuck to one medium.

I think Michael Dorn has a Worf TV show in development.

Wha? The shitty Next Generation movies certainly didn't help. But the Abrahms movies.have proved the marketability of the Star Trek franchise.

I'm thinking something after TNG. They can't reasonably put together a TOS cast that would compete with the Abrams cast.

Just as TNG was the next step from TOS. It's time to take another step forward. I think that as long as they have a strong central cast member, like Patrick Stewart, they can pretty much stick to the same formula.

Following the wars with the Borg, Dominion and various other races, the Federation has become more based in science and exploration and less about having to monopolize territories in accordance with the now 50 year old Picard Directive implimented by Admiral Picard before his retirement. In 2425, The Federation encounters a new threat while attempting to colonize the outer (insert quadrant). A new enemy of unknown origin and increased tactical capability begins decimating Federation outposts. In response, Executive Officer of Federation operations Admiral Data (cameo) orders the head of the LaForge Ship Yards to begin the construction of the first Spartan class starship. The new ship would have equivalent explorative and tactical capabilities. In addition, the ship would employ the newly developed Temporal Transition Drive (TTD) allowing the ship to travel beyond the once impossible warp 10, therefore allowing the ship to make trips across the Federation and galaxy with much greater speed. A former special forces type is tapped from Starfleet Intelligence to leave his desk job and get back into the field as Captain, but first he has to assemble an impressive core of senior officers.

Then insert some continuing incursion from a preliminary invading force from another galaxy coupled with exploration of previously unexplored planets and systems in the outer quadrants. The ships new and unique capability essentially makes the new Enterprise and its crew the Federations ready reaction force or 911 service for various incidents that arise throughtout the galaxy all the while moving towards the bigger plot of the invading forces. Boom!

Mediocre movies that could have just as easily been 2 hour TV episodes are why the movies did so poorly.

Star Trek: Federation was planned for the year 3000 and could have brought a very different perspective to the series. It would have only been about 600 years forward, but the premise was interesting

quote:

Star Trek: Federation would take place in the same continuity as the original shows and films, but in the year 3000. Additional aspects saw the series serve as something of a metaphor for the decline of the Roman Empire, with Starfleet having fallen from scientific prominence seemingly waiting for another Kirk to lead the charge in restoring Starfleet to former glory.

I think the hardcore fans would have loved it. It would need to walk a pretty fine line though because people are stupid and if you have a show that is too mythologically centered then you would loose the audience quickly.

I think one of the reasons TNG was so epic was that if followed the same formula as TOS and tipped the hat with enough cameos that the diehards could get excited but at the same time appealing to a new audience.
