I have been reading the OT the past few days with several threads regarding pit bulls. I am wondering how the folks on here feel about certain dogs.

I am a proud owner of a american/pit i use for hogs and a lap dog. she is probably the sweetest dog i have ever owned regarding her interactions with people. however, she will kill a strange dog or any animal quick like.

i have had pits, curs, dobermans and rottweillers. I have never had a problem with any of my dogs.

Does the OB think it's the breed, the raising or breeding practices?

As long as they have a collar on, they are ok with me.

I honestly love dogs but I could never own a pit. You just never know with those things

I think it's a combination of both breed and training.

i have a theory about that but it's long winded. i totally agree with the combination of both.

the three of my dogs do a job and i try to raise them right. but... i am about ready to put a bullet in my wifes redbone

I really don't understand why anyone would own known aggressive dog breeds

I wouldn't own one, but I could see them being great for hunting/defense if trained right.

explain an aggressive dog breed. I know pits and americans have a bad rep but they are not "supposed" to aggressive towards people. other animals is another story and i admit that.

the most aggressive and mean dog i have ever been around was a jack russell terrior. mean as all get out.

all this goes back to my theory of breeding practices i guess.

When will she feel threatened from someone or a kid?

dogs that are known to be aggressive

you know the breeds

I understand that 99% of dog attacks are because of shitty owners, but I still don't understand why anyone would want to own one

you never hear about a beagle killing a kid

Every dog can be aggressive and bite. But some breeds have extra strength where it matters and can do serious damage.

i have actually thought of that. she is wary of strangers especially when my boys are close by.

she actually scared the shite out of me one day. a couple years back she broke away from me and hauled arse towards a little boy she had never seen before. I was yelling, running and cussing at her. when she got to this kid, she slid on her back and rolled into his legs with her belly up to be rubbed. the little boys gave her love and i apologized profusely to his parents.

I got no problem with someone having a pit or other dog as long as they control it and keep it detained in a manner that it can not attack another dog or more importantly a child. I feel it is in the breed to be aggressive and no matter how much training I could still never trust one. Take this example, you get a lab and from day one never ever let it see a tennis ball, or allow it to fetch, 2 years later someone throws a tennis ball and I bet the lab will fetch, it is in their genetics, IMHO

I agree.

Sounds like too much of a hassle I'd rather just have a pet that would have less risk of attacking strangers. But not to say my lab isn't a good thief deterrent because he barks his arse off at things he doesn't recognize.

You know how we preach that a gun has never gone out and killed a child on its own. This does not apply for Pit bulls (yes, lots of dogs kill). With pits you just never know.
I'm a dog lover.
