Getting Credit Limit increased (Chase)

So I graduated last December (13 months ago) and I had yet to receive a credit limit increase even though I make and spend a lot more than before. I've had the card for years, and my limit was $1,500 bucks...

I was very pleased that to get it increased, all I had to do was ask. I had bitched about my credit limit being so low for a while, but simply asked for $1,000 more and within an hour, my limit was increased.

Just wanted to let others know who may have the same problem. I did it all online using their "contact us" tab and like that I got a credit limit increase.

You only got it bumped $1,000?

Last time I asked AMEX to bump mine, I went up $7,000. I am thinking of asking again and getting another $8,000 added just for the sake of it.

Just got my first AMEX a few months ago for my work expenses. frickers only gave me $2,000. I've got other cards with over 15k limits. What are the chances I can get a bump? I've paid it off in full (multiple times per month).

Chase started me with a 16k limit a few months ago. Amex wouldn't go above 6k

AMEX is a pain in the ass.

I have had a USAA card since I was 18 and an AMEX since I was 22. The limits were 1,200 and 1,100 for the AMEX. I got the AMEX while working a 12.50 an hour full time job between undergrad and law school. A year ago, age 27 and making over 30 dollars an hour, I asked for a small increase through USAA to 3,000 (I didn't want to ask for too much). I got that easily, predictably enough.

Asked for the same amount through AMEX, they told me to go frick myself, still 1,100.

Capital One Venture Card just sent me a card with a $10,000 limit. Go figure.

Amex gold = no pre-set spending limit. Problem solved.

Considering their previous behavior, I doubt they would even issue me a card.

I don't use it anyways, I just wanted to bump up my credit score.

Should be quite good. Just make sure you ask for enough of a bump -- you can only request an increase every 6 months.

They will see your payment record and then ask for your annual income (for a personal card). They put it in the system and then it gives an autoresponse. If you are not autoqualified, then I think a person reviews it.

They asked me what I wanted it bumped to, and I didn't want to get rejected so I said a number I felt they would definitely give me.

I pay it off all the time, but I've had a few purchases (plane flights, etc) that I couldn't use my credit card for because my damn limit. I don't think I'll have that problem as much anymore.

I'll have to ask how much they can get me next time. I'll do it again in 6 months. Really no reason right now seeing that I am not looking to make any big purchases for another year or so.

That's actually surprising to me. I asked AMEX to triple my limit after I had only had the card for 5 months and they did it, I'll probably do it again in another 6 months just because.

Your income has nothing to do with your credit score. It is not reported to the credit bureaus or listed on your credit report.

In other words, one could easily inflate what they "earn" and provide that misinformation to their credit card company.

I didn't say credit score -- if you are asking for a credit increase with AMEX, I imagine it makes sense for AMEX to consider how you are paying your statement during your life as a customer. I only think credit score goes into the initial application for the card.

Yes, one could lie about what they earn.

It has always been my understanding that your credit score is "hard" pulled upon the application process and "soft" pulled for credit line increases.

The soft pull is what I was told by USAA when I did that one last year.

Credit card companies will ask you for income on the application. You could lie, but they also say they "may" ask you for records to prove what you say. I imagine if something doesn't jive by a lot the system will flag it for further documentation, or maybe they are just trying to scare the shite out of you.

I just went ahead and asked USAA for another manual limit increase. I threw in my 10,000 limit with Capital One, the fact I spent 2,000 a month on their card and my income. Hopefully they give me a good bump.

frick AMEX, I'm not even trying with them.

ETA: I stand corrected. I went for a modest increase from 1,100 to 2,000 and AMEX accepted it.

So, in a week I went from 4,100 to 15,000 in credit with one more request to go.

I have the Gold Premier Rewards. Fixing to pay 2nd bill. No pre-set spending limit is a load of crap though. They evaluate each purchase and have right of refusal.

I'm holding this card until December and either bumping down to the Green or going to the Platinum.

Biggest complaint so far is calling AMEX drunk at 1AM asking them to book me a hotel in NOLA. Claimed they couldn't because it was after 10PM and I'd have to wait until next days check in. There's no hotel upgrade either. First time I wished I had the Platinum. Guarantee I wouldn't have had to deal with that crap- they'd have made the reservation and sent me a car pickup.

Probably should, USAA came through with a bump from 3 to 6,000. They're handing out credit like candy again

Good for a general rule of thumb, but most CC companies have a point where CLIs after that point is always labelled a hard pull.
