Well, if they both only have 4GB shared between the CPU and GPU, which is the rumor and assuming 4GB is going to the Kinect on Xbox, then they both will be obsolete again in 4-5 years while we are stuck with them for 10.

For RAM? Next to none.

512MB total in the PS3.

512MB and game devs have been bitching about it for years now not being enough but at the time of release it was fine.

We will be in the same boat in the future if these rumors are true.

So that's roughly 8x the RAM? I mean, that by itself seems like a jump, no?

If that part about the PS4 being a strictly gaming machine, I guess I know where I'm spending my money.

Isn't memory cheap as hell now? I don't get the limitations.

This dude really just say 4gb of ram (system and gpu combined) is good enough for gaming PCs?

It is, 4GB of RAM will run any game right now and is the recommended amount on spec sheets for games.

The argument is years from now in consoles, which who knows, probably not, at least not on par with where PC's will be then, but that is how consoles always are and probably always will be.

They'll be up there close to solid PC builds for a couple of years max, then fall behind, then fall way behind, and a new one will come out.

Yes it is.

A Crytek Dev

quote:

If they find ways to cheapen the cost to a degree they could triple or quadruple their memory. Just say, 'Hey we're going to have 32 gigs of memory'. That would be quite amazing because memory can do so many more techniques and tricks.

More ram, not just faster, is really important to implement stuff devs want to put into games.

ETA

quote:

The topic of discussion was the next-generation of home consoles and how expensive memory will make things more challenging for the next home consoles. Yerli has been a strong advocate that home consoles need more RAM, suggesting earlier in the year that home consoles should ship with at least 8GB of RAM so developers could get more out of the hardware.

quote:

While talking with VideoGamer.com, Yerli apparently shared new details on the PlayStation 4 (Codename: Orbis) and Xbox 720 (Codename: Durango). When the topic of conversation came to RAM and memory, Yerli shared that “memory is the single most important thing that is always going to be underbalanced - I've never seen a console where the memory was the right balance.”

Sounds like Sony may win this round for gamers at least.

The PS4 sounds like it is going to be more powerful and solely gaming focused, while the 720 is going to be more of an "entertainment" console catering to Kinect 2.0.

this is going to really hinder game development for consoles

small maps/worlds/environments
limited customization
limited multiplayer #s

it will be "a step up" but 4GB will surely bottleneck console development.

Just another cycle of consoles being underpowered, but easy and appealling to the masses, while PC remains glorious yet out of reach for so many. what else is new

Gotta cut costs somewhere. They have to make millions of these things. Sony and MS are for profit companies. They are going to make the consoles as cheap as they possibly can.

Consoles don't hold PC gaming back. Piracy and demand hold pc gaming back.

Unfortunately at this moment in time it looks like we will be going for something closer to a 7850 but it's worth noting this could change even only months before launch. Either way the current configuration, with writing to the metal we should be able to probably get Battlefield 3 on high with most or all settings turned up full running at 1080P and 60FPS. It's nothing to sneer at but part of me is still holding out for even better. After all consider that if the next generation consoles come out in 2014 by 2016 they will be "base platforms" as PC's will have grown in power. Now if they can get Agni's Philosophy running on a base platform then imagine what they could do with a mid range or high end PC. Either way though with what we know about things expect a giant leap, consoles have an edge since you don't have API overhead, you write to the metal. Even a 7850 equivalent in a console is a big big jump up.

In addition to this, it is also stated that Sony and Microsoft may be able to pull in profit with a launch price of $300-$350.

The PS4's RAM bandwidth is rumoured to be 192 GB/s, whilst the 720's 64 GB/s. Remember, a lot of this is just speculation, but it does point to a split down the middle that could ultimately prove tricky for developers. 8 GB will be much better for open worlds, but the faster RAM better for effects in more constrained environments.

Sounds like niether will be all around gaming platforms but yes Xbox is going to an all in one enertainment option. Been this way for a few years now. It's no secret and truly it may be what helps them turn a profit faster. They make a billion dollars a year off of Xbox live transactions like movie rentals and people buying avatar props. It would be dumb financially for them not to keep moving towards that.

I don't think Sony has that option because their PSN is not as user friendly. They are smart to go back to the basics. They need to keep it simple anyway since they are on the verge of bankruptcy as it is. Can't take too many risk.

so they "should" be able to "probably" get Battlefield 3 (released in 2011) running 60 fps at 1080 using "most" settings...

Sony could scale back some on it's CPU add more ram and be better off than what the rumors are saying.

I will give you piracy but as consoles have become less adequate the past few years PC demand has increased.

I love the approach by Sony it appears, going solely towards gaming and leaving the gimmicky shite like Kinect and the less powerful gaming rig to Microsoft.

If the 720 really is half as powerful as the PS4, then the 720 will become the Wii/U and most kid oriented with Kinect and other entertainment, while the PS4 will be more on par with PC's for a few years.

Where did you get that it would be a whole half as powerful?

Ummm...a 7850 will be a 3 year old GPU by the time the PS4 comes out.
