I am contemplating buying a hard drive to add to my xbox (4GB flash memory only). I'm not paying for the official microsoft xbox hd that is marked up like 90% over retail of the same drive that isn't official.

Question: is it as simple as buying a 2.5" SATA hard drive and formatting in the correct format and plugging it in? Voided warranty? Will I get kicked off xbox live?

You act like it can't be done. I use an old 120GB laptop hard drive in my spare Xbox.

RMC, there are several Yotuube videos that show you what you need and how to do it. It's not hard at all.

There are also some after market unofficial Xbox HDs you can get on ebay for like $40

You can also use 32 GB thumb drives on any Xbox for storage.

Yes, there are plenty of Youtube videos. Consider that the next xbox is right around the corner. If you need the space now then do what you need to do. If you are just trying to plan ahead you may want to invest it into the 720.

Probably going to do this. I have probably 30 jump drives between my house and my moms. I'm just looking for more space so my kid can download demos and play them. He never keeps interest in a game beyond a day or two, but every now and then he'll want to play the lego's star wars demo we downloaded 10 months ago.

I used my old 500gb 3.5" hard drive for my xbox. I put it in an external enclosure and worked perfectly

I don't play any multiplayer games online for any of my consoles. The last one was probably NCAA football '08 or 09. It's really just to download demos of games, maybe even full versions.

You should be fine with a 2.5" drive. I used a 3.5" on my Xbox for sometime
