Went shooting 3 months ago. Ears still ring.?

Any of you ever experience this? Wore ear protection but did shoot 20 guage without. Hanging out with a group of folks dove hunting. So we wore protection while shooting skeet and shooting handguns. But of course with the doves flying in there a couple shots were fired with no earplugs.

Desert Eagle was one that was shot. That of course was with ear protection.

Any of you ever have this? It is not painful but is a constant ring.

Yes... Brought a 686 (.357 magnum) out in the woods once with no protection

That night and for about 2-3 days after I was nauseated and ears actually hurt

I couldn't sleep well for a while. That was literally years ago and I think I still have some light ringing constantly, but honestly I only notice when I think about it so I can't be sure

I read this thread and realized my ears were ringing as I lie here sick in silence

EDIT. For those who aren't familiar with what a 686 is

It's called tinnitus. Usually it comes and goes, could last forever.

I had it bad after a buddy of mine shot over me with a 20ga so I went to get my ears checked. Everything checked out fine and I still had great hearing.

I usually don't wear ear protection while hunting, although I need to start getting into the habit of it, at least some of the time. What really matters though that a lot of people don't think about is other loud machinery. The boat engine on the way to the blind/fishing hole, lawn mower, weed eater, etc. All these things do damage to your hearing even if it's only a little. It also does not help with tinnitus.

I've found that if the ringing is really bad, sometimes I can put an earplug in that ear for a while and it helps, but there's really not a whole lot you can do other than learn to ignore it.

Also, thanks for making me aware of the ringing in my right ear that I've been succesfully ignoring all day!

Yes for the love of God, don't try and shoot a .357 magnum without hearing protection unless you have to! That shite hurts... even when you're wasted. I usually carry my plugs with me when I'm hunting with the Security Six.

Could it be work related?

earplugs.

Just some information on earplugs. Some are said to cause more damage than they prevent. If they touch the ear drum, they can cause problems. I recommend wearing headphone style instead of earplugs.

In the LEO community, we never use earplugs because of this. If we're shooting something really loud, we will use plugs and headphones.

Sorry, I don't have a link to back this up. Just what I've always been told in my career.

I fired a Weatherby mag that had a muzzle brake without ear protection last year. I was practically deaf for a few hours and my right ear rang for the next several days. I'm ultra paranoid about ear protection ever since...

Thats only if you wear them incorrectly. Earplugs are just fine if you put them in properly.

I agree with you. There just seems to be less chance of something going wrong with the headphones. That being said, I will use foam plugs from time to time when using lawn equipment and other loud machines.

We train in an indoor range so it is extremely loud with 20 people firing at the same time.

People who work in loud industrial jobs get custom made plugs which probably work great. Never tried them.

I use the surefire ones, cant think of the name off the top of my head, but they only block sounds above certain DB levels.

I know. I am an RN so I know what tinnitus is. shite is just annoying. And I know if I went to an ENT he will find nothing structurally wrong with my ear.

No. Only work aspect of it is when it becomes more noticeable in my quiet office. But nothing loud occurs at my job.

Just concerns me when I want to go shoot again. Indoor range may frick me up even with earplugs.

I don't know what to tell you. A 20ga really shouldn't have caused you a problem. I 7mm has a muzzle break and my ears only ring for a few seconds afterwards. I couldn't imagine that lasting for 3 months.
