Yes. The same way a Ferrari is just a car.

I have one. Very reliable instant read thermometer. I use it for chicken. I don't like to overcook chicken and dry it out.

from one review:

I've tried other thermometers, but got frustrated waiting endlessly while they slowly ticked upward.

Seriously? What a perfectly American "problem." My digital meat thermometer I got from Home Depot for $10 bucks gives an accurate reading and only takes 10-15 seconds. Sorry .. that amount of extra time isn't worth $70 fricking dollars.

Seriously....

I have one that was $17 that takes MAYBE 2 seconds....

If I'm spending $70 on a thermometer it better be IR.

This explains the difference between it and other cheap thermometers.

Thermocouple vs Thermistor

It also addresses display refresh speed vs true temperature reporting.

Small paring knife, insert into meat product for three seconds not near a bone, pull out and touch to lower lip.

Well when you're cooking 12 chickens at once, it comes in handy

Are you some old MFer? You seem to really hate anything that is convenient.
