sleep on the ground when tent camping?
Posted by beulahland on 1/17/13 at 11:06 pm00
We did it till well into our 20s. Sleeping bag and groundcloth. Now we have cots, wall tent and a stove. If you can't truck it, fu@k it. Havn't backpacked in and out since college.
Anyone still primitive camp?

Haven't camped period in quite a while. I should go again this spring.

we do it once a year deer hunting in Wyomings Black Hills NF. BIG fun! but after a week of it, the altitude and the humping up and down the hills wears me down.

Yes. Thermarest with sleeping bag on top. Frick a tent, unless absolutely necessary.

I just started backpacking last year so yeah, I still sleep on the ground. I carry a tent and a Klimit XFrame air mattress. The mattress is 10 oz, I think. The tent is right at 2lbs. I enjoy it a lot.

Me and the wife do a couple times a year. We take our bug out bags and head to our land. We enjoy it, and it helps figure out what you really need.

Very true. Trying to find time to go longer and to unfamiliar land, but between out jobs, it's hard to do more than a long weekend.

I think the hardest thing to deal with long term are the f$%king bugs. We hardly ever get a damn break from the skeeters. We keep insect repellant, but that shite will only last so long in a real long term bug out situation.

I would love to, but if there isn't a bed and a bathroom the wife isn't interested.

And ticks. As for all the "bug" wear shite, It dont work for shite on mosquitos and these damn vampire horse and deer flies. Those bastards will light you up.
But I do love sleeping in a tent. We have a camper too and a couple of camps, but we still primitive camp when we can.

Been primitive camping in TX for 40 years. Still do it when I can, though I only do so in Fall, Winter, and Spring (about 3 months out of the year). Few or no bugs then. Sleep on the ground...like thick pine needle underlay.
Summer time, I go truck camping up in Idaho where you can drive to some really remote areas. Use an air mattress or cot then.
I always have a screened in tent. No bug problems.

I sleep on my pad that's on the ground quite a bit. I'll be snow camping tomorrow night on Mt. Hood at about 9k feet.
Eta....my back can't handle the ground and hasn't been able to for sometime. I have to be comfortable.
