| Hoop net questions (Posted on 1/16/13 at 7:05 pm)
I just picked up 3 18" hoop nets from my dad. I have never used them and have a few questions. I plan on getting the gear license and using them at Lake Fausse Point to try and catch some catfish. What should I use for bait? How deep should I set them? And, does anyone have any other tips they are willing to share?

cottonseed cakes are good but be careful that no sacalait get in there. Catfish will get after almost anything, but if you want to catch flatheads, then put them in a creek channel with no bait and just let them sit for at least two weeks. A month would be about optomal. point the hole down current so trash doesnt get in there and good luck.

Never seen 18" hoop nets, you sure it isnt the round traps? If it is hoops, you are gonna have to put them on bottom, so how deep depends on where you are putting them. I use them on a bayou alot and when its normal height I look for some deeper clear holes or around natural creeks, etc... that run into it. When its high, it will get outside the banks and the will run on the bank eating the bugs and all that are forced out of the ground. Thats where I have my best luck. As far as bait, we have a local trapper supply store and he carries the loaf of cottonmill seed/cheese and whatever else is in it pressed together. Take a hatchet and knock a couple inches off and stick it in the bait bag... your good to go. And always point open end down stream if any current. I assume it is if its hoop nets and not traps.

Thanks for the tips guys. I know they seem small, but definitely hoop nets. They stretch out to about 6 feet. I know where to get cotton seed cake in north LA, but does anyone know where to find it in South Central La?

Cool, I have some 24" hoop nets and the small ones work. Not familiar with where you are going and how current is but be sure and stretch them out good. Good luck No idea where to get the bait down there but shouldnt be too hard to find.

That's just a regular "hoop style"catfish trap. Bait with old stinky cheese or dog food tied up in the foot of some pantyhose and run them every other day. Hoop nets are about 5 foot tall x 20 feet long and look similar in design to what you have, just way bigger. Those are supposed to be fish exactly like the poster hardhead said above.

I honestly thought this might be an outdoor basketball goal thread.

its time.... its time... and to the OP the smaller ones work better if you run tomato stakes between the hoops to hold them open. just cut a notch on the ends and cut them to the appropriate length, then zip tie the inner hoops to the stakes.

This guy is on point. I prefer using a 2 inch green hardwood sapling... but you get the idea.

Pogey and other fish is more potent, but turkey necks last longer. Nevermind, I was thinking for crabs for some reason.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I thought I read in the regs before that it was illegal to use anything to hold your nets open like that.

If you have the turtles like I do where I fish them dont let them stay a month. Just a week and you will have 10 of them in there soggy and rotting.

I have heard that buy keeping a small part of the back of the net out of the water, like 5 inches, it gives the turtles room to breathe and they won't die as fast in the nets.

I've always used the soy blocks for bait. I've also had the most success setting them in dog legs of the river. It may just be a coincidence though.

Older gentleman told me the other day to hang the smaller hoop nets (which you have) mouth down from a branch or so. He said you don't even have to bait it. "Catfish think it is a log or something and swim up in it". Also, he said cheese is the best for catfish, and the cotton seed cake works best on scale fish.

The only problem is this is also how people discover your nets and run em for you.

That's what my dad said too, was to hang them straight down, but I thought he was crazy. Guess I should have listened to my old man. Again, I appreciate all the info I can get.
