I am thinking about getting a bolt action rifle for hunting (deer) and target shooting.

I think I want a caliber somewhere between a 270 and a 30-06

I am looking for a good starting rifle, and therefore do not want to spend a fortune.

One of my biggest questions to y'all is what rifles and ammo are going to be available these days given the nonsense coming from up north. I know the OB is much more tied into the firearm scene and ammo availability that I am, and I come humbly for advice.

Thanks.

270 or 30-06 is your best bet at finding ammo and price of ammo. Lets not get into discussion which would be better, both will drop a deer just fine. You will also hear many suggestions on brand, go with savage, remington or tikka and you will be fine. My personal fav is the savage with the accutrigger, top it with a nikon prostaff scope..and you have a deer killimg machine in your budget

I love my Remington shotguns, and I have looked at the 700 and 770,

How easy/tough is 30-06 to get right now? Quite frankly I haven't bought anything but shells in over a year, and I have no idea.

Thanks for this, I know the lower model Savages (Axis?) don't have the accutrigger, could you explain to the uninitiated why this makes a difference? You aren't the first person that I have heard say this.

You can get a 30-06 and ammo pretty easy now.

The axis is the only one i wouldnt recommend. Its alot of plastic. All the other savages with accutrigger are nice. It gives you the advantage to adjust your own trigger with a screw to your likings without taking to a gunsmith. Helps with accuracy a ton. I own several accutrigger savages and hbe zero complaints

.30-06 .308 or .270 for caliber

Get whatever rifle fits your price range. They are all good. Some are better values than others but they are all good 2 MOA or better rifles.

Besides handgun ammo and 223 (and some 308), all hunting ammo is still obtainable.

30-06, 270, and 308 are still plentiful on shelves.

I suggest the Remington 700 as a great out-of-the-box rifle, but as suggested by others, Savage and Tikka also have some good reviews.

And although the Ruger American is new, it's supposed to be a great hunting rifle for the money.
