From what I have read, it suffers from being a good game while drawing the ire of long-time series fans. They weren't happy with the character revisions.

I am waiting for the PC release. Not sure why it did not come out the same day as consoles but the game looks like it's just a button masher. I still can't wait to play it though.

There is a vocal minority of faux gothic, obsessed, brooding morons who don't even want to move past the fact that Dante looks different. He doesn't have white hair, which is apparently a prerequisite for dull antiheroes (Geralt of Rivia notwithstanding, because he actually has some interesting dialog).
I'm sure the bad reviews are some message board's coordinated effort to let Capcom know the otaku will not tolerate this reboot.

Metacritic occasionally suffers from users bombing the ratings just to be trolls and give it a low rating.

Traditional DMC is far from a button masher. No idea on the new one, but I have faith in ninja theory.

Honestly, my first thought was that the developer had paid off the standard critics. Granted, I know absolutely nothing about the game and can't pass judgment, I'm just a cynic.

There's a ton of criticisms that given to games that hold no merit and based entirely on the expectations held by the critic.
I don't see how not having a lock-on button (for DmC and games like Monster Hunter) is a valid negative critique, but you still see it in reviews.

never cared(and havent played or kept up with this DMC) for the series but this review sums up why its not getting good user scores.

Picked it up last night, it is a button masher, but its very fun and I'm interested in the story so far.. 8/10
ETA: Ive never played any of the previous ones so i dont care about the makeover at all. There was a pretty funny part at the beginning that references the makeover.
