So I was pondering trades and came across this- kinda a cumulative look at possible trades. I like the one they did...
at #15 Jones & Mingo BOTH on the board. So the Saints trade back to #18 for a 4th rder and still get one of them.

Analysis: If you're curious as to why I'd take Te'o in Round 1, it has a lot to do with how the board sets up, and how the defensive depth chart sets up. The Saints need to upgrade the talent on defense, period. The pass rush in the 3-4 is of particular concern. However, with Jarvis Jones, Dion Jordan and Barkevious Mingo off the board, I'm reaching if I target an OLB at that slot. Pretty badly, in fact. Next, the defensive line at least has some youth. The Saints used their first pick on presumptive starter at NT Akiem Hicks last year. And they used a first-rounder on Cameron Jordan the year before. So it was either a corner or a linebacker, and the cornerback value is also not good at No. 15. So Te'o is the pick, providing an immediate starter, and the chance to move some people around to maximize the unit. Later, I grab an extremely productive 3-4 OLB in Collins. With 20 tackles for a loss last season, Collins was disruptive and could be a useful pass-rusher even as a rookie.

15. New Orleans Saints: Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State

At 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, Rhodes ran a strong 4.43 40-yard-dash at the Combine and jumps off the screen in his game tape. He’s a big, fast physical specimen who can play right from the get go. He’s somewhat raw, but he could be a nice addition to Rob Ryan’s aggressive 3-4.

The Saints fired Steve Spagnuolo and announced that they are moving to a 3-4 defense. A new scheme doesn't mean they'll be able to fix their old problems, however. Despite adding Victor Butler, they still need to find a top pass-rusher to make things easier for an overmatched secondary. Barkevious Mingo makes a ton of sense here as one of the best prospects available.

*** OTHER 2013 NFL DRAFT POSSIBILITIES: ***

1. Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB - Another pass-rushing option for the Saints' new 3-4.

2. Lane Johnson, OT - The Saints could move ahead of the Chargers for the Oklahoma tackle. Sean Payton recently told the Chicago Sun-Times' Sean Jensen that he has "nightmares" about the left tackle position.

--Mingo over Jarvis Jones. Quite a few scenarios where the Saints would take whichever top pass rusher the Jets do not select. Similarly a lot of scenarios where the Saints have a choice of two top 3-4OLBs and the Steelers would take whichever one the Saints don't.

New Orleans Saints - OT Terron Armstead (Arkansas Pine-Bluff)..One of the Saints biggest needs is at the OT position since they lost OT Jermon Bushrod to the Bears in free agency...this is a little bit too high for Armstead, so look for the Saints to attempt to move down and out of this pick. Trade Down!
Team Needs - OT, NT, DE, OLB; Offense - Spread offense, Zone blocking. Defense - 3-4 scheme, Man coverage.

--surely a different name you won't see this high too much. I could imagine a stretch LT pick if the Saints had one rated close enough. History shows they stick by their big board and aren't afraid to take a name that pundits decry as a reach.

I'm not the least bit certain about my Saints' pick this week. Unless New Orleans has a conviction about Florida State's Menelik Watson, there's no offensive tackle who looks to be a great mid-round value and replacement for left tackle Jermon Bushrod. With Mingo gone, the Saints would have to decide if Jones carries a top-half-of-the-round grade, or if an upgrade at safety (Texas' Kenny Vaccaro, Florida's Matt Elam or Florida International's Jonathan Cyprien) is more in order? We're going with Jones given the urgent need for more edge pass rush threat in Rob Ryan's new 3-4 defense. Another scenario to watch for: If a team like the Bengals or 49ers covets West Virginia's Tavon Austin, they're going to have to trade up to at least No. 15, ahead of the No. 16 Rams, who are known to want him. That means the Saints might be presented with some trade-down possibilities, allowing them to take Watson lower and perhaps even regain the second-round selection they lost in the bounty program penalties.

If none of the top 4 pass rushing OLBs, Star, or Richardson are available is when a trade down scenario looks more likely and better. A LT like Watson or Armstead would be value to get excited about 10 picks or so later.

15. New Orleans Saints - Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia (6'2" 245)
The Saints have switched to a 3-4 defensive front, which makes this a good possible landing spot for Jones, who is quite possibly the biggest enigma of the elite, top-tier prospects in this year's draft. His pass-rushing skills are unquestionably strong. He faces top-flight competition and excelled, even when teams game-planned against him. The negative for him that doesn't really apply for the Saints: he's below prototype height for a 4-3 DE and overall undersized compared with some of the other elite guys.

The big concern for Jones is his diagnosis of spinal stenosis, which is an abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal. Read this write-up to find out more. The boom-or-bust potential here is huge. Southern Cal refused to clear him to play after a 2009 neck injury, which lead to his transfer to Georgia. There will be some teams that refuse to draft him based on that alone, never mind his 12½ sacks in 2012. Hypothetically he could go as high as #2 to the Jaguars or outright fall out of the first round. I daresay there are few other players, if any, who fit into that category.
