South Park's Matt & Trey to open their own studio dubbed "Important Studios"

stolen dgaf.
In a time of change for the balance of power in Hollywood, with more creators dealing directly with fans online and bypassing the traditional showbiz infrastructure, this is an interesting move. According to the press release, in announcing the new venture, they settled on this quip: “Having worked with several different studios over the years, we came to realize that our favorite people in the world are ourselves.”
The New York Times reported the studio will launch with an estimated value of $300 million, built on revenue from “South Park,” now in its 16th season on Comedy Central, and the Broadway megahit “The Book of Mormon.” The studio will have the power and money to approve television, movie and theater projects.
The first product is likely to be a big screen version of “The Book of Mormon.”

This is so awesome and could open so many possibilities.

If TBOM is done like Orgasmo it'll be greatness.

Yeah, this studio is going to pale in comparison to Happy Madison.
In all seriousness, I love that these guys are going to be running their own production studio. Pretty sure if they find something that's just funny, they'll greenlight it for others to do. Think Matt and Trey could run a great film company.

So much win. I'm looking forward to some amazing comedies in the future.

Ehh, maybe. I think they could have done one at any time over the past 10 years if they wanted to. They were thinking of making Imaginationland a theatrical release, but didn't think it was good enough to justify it.

I would be first in line for a BASEketball sequel

I'd be interested to see where the 300 million cones from.
Or is that basically the value of SP, and they are moving from working in house with Viacom and going on their own (still bound by Viacom contracts)

Did you even read the OP?

Yes
It doesn't say well where the valuation comes from.
Just because of Parker's and Trey's brand name, or does this studio own the South Park IP.
I just find it hard to believe they can pull 300 million out of their combined pockets....
If so, wow. Had no idea they were making that much.

Ok, I misunderstood the differentiation you were making. My apologies
I'd imagine their SP contract got better and better over the years though. And it's always been marketed well.
From what I gathered Book of Mormon was their baby and pretty much theirs alone, but don't quote me on that.

I can believe it given that it's been almost 2 decades. They carried Comedy Central through a pretty dark period, and I'd imagine they made sure they were rewarded well for it.

I'm sure they've made much more than that just with South Park. Remember all the merchandise that was around about ten years ago? Video games, board games, clothing, dolls, toys, posters, etc.
ETA: according to celebrity net worth, each is worth approximately 300 million.
