So, I watched Breakfast with Hunter last night. I was in a Hunter S Thompson mood so I decided it was finally time to watch the Rum Diary.

I don't think I've ever watched a movie where I cannot find any fault with any of the actors performances, the location, the direction, or the cinematography, and came away thinking, "Wow, that movie sucked."

The story was that weak. You cannot blame anything else.

Hunter may have been one of America's great essayists/journalist, but he was a shite novelist. No wonder that thing was published posthumously

The story was boring and slow compared to Fear.

To be fair, Hunter did not write the screenplay.

The book was published years before he died. Thompson's books are very difficult to bring to the screen.

agree for the most part...I didn't really think it sucked though...just felt complete apathy when it was over.

Haven't seen yet but this is really disappointing to hear. One of the three Depp offerings since 2004 that I wanted to see and haven't yet.

Depp does a great job--as does Eckhart and Rispoli--but the story sucks. There's just nothing there. It's a collection of set pieces with no pay off. I've lived in places like that, and I have had those experiences. It's fun to relive them, but for me to enjoy a movie, there has to be a point. In the Rum Diary, there's no payoff...no point. It just exists.

The book was never published. Johnny Depp took the unfinished manuscript and made it into what he made it into.

Well to be fair. I watch the first 15 minutes and said: This isn't the same thing I read and shut it off. Oh and the book has been listed in the LoC since 99. And was published in 98. I don't know where you're getting this posthumous stuff from.

I made a mistake. It's the other novel that will be published posthumously. He just waited 40 or so years to publish this one because he was broke.

I know what you're talking about. It's the one that's a bunch of short stories or something like that.

I love The Rum Dairy novel. For me it made me want to move to Porto Rico and work for a shitty newspaper and be drunk all day.

I'm a freelance writer. I lived/live in Central America. I stayed drunk most of the time.

I recommend it, but one must take regular breaks each 6 months. Also, drink plenty of fluids.

Ha, excellent post. I completely agree with you.

Wasn't terrible, just seemed pointless.

Are you sure about that, because I'm pretty positive that I've owned a copy of the book for years?
