re: Sen. J. McCarthy was right.

quote:

J. Edgar Hoover and Joe McCarthy were far bigger threats to the country than the Russkies ever were

So even though the Russkies helped plant influence into high levels of the US Government via Alger Hiss at the State Department; Harry Dexter White, assistant secretary of the Treasury Department, (who was later appointed to the International Monetary Fund by President Truman); Lauchlin Currie, personal assistant to President Roosevelt and White House liaison to the State Department under both Roosevelt and Truman; Laurence Duggan, head of the Latin American Desk at the State Department; Frank Coe, US representative on the International Monetary Fund; Solomon Adler, senior Treasury Department official; Klaus Fuchs, top atomic scientist; and Duncan Lee, senior aide to the head of the OSS....it was the US loving head of the FBI and an alcoholic, attention whoring US loving Senator who were the real threats. Got it.

re: Sen. J. McCarthy was right.

McCarthy became a major target after initially claiming he had the names of 57 communists or communist sympathizers working in the State Department who needed to be investigated and the later citing a letter from former Secretary of State James Byrnes to Congress which stated that there were 205 known security risks that were still working there. He was merely asking for closer scrutiny in a way that embarrassed opponents found unappealing.

His tactic was not to accuse specific individuals (though he later did when pressured to do so by his opponents who may have thought he was bluffing), but to implicate the Democrats for seemingly ignoring ridiculous security risks in key government jobs.

Hollywood was full of communists.

I really don't care. They are free to have whatever political beliefs they want. As long as they are not giving away state secrets to other communist countries, I couldn't care less.

However he was shouted down and the USA got on the slippery slope that brings us to where we are now.

No. I don't think anyone back then could have seen the country the way it is now. Part of that is good and part of that is bad.

However you wish to put it, I do not feel that this country is becoming a communist state. It is becoming more of a welfare state. Very different things.

True or false?

Overall false
