Yeah, the .223 AR round is probably why the burglar lived. That round has a very low initial muzzle velocity and doesn't become highly effective until it reaches 2,500 fps, at which point if fragments upon contact with flesh and causes devastating injuries. It takes a good distance for the round to get up to that velocity, though, making it a poor choice for something like home defense.

If you know how to shoot, the .45 is better for home defense.

If you don't know how to shoot, or have never shot before, you could literally point a handgun at someone a few feet away and just start pulling that trigger and hit nothing but air.

Especially if its a scared 15 year old that doesn't stop and aim properly between shots.

Of course, with a .45 at close range he'd only have to hit the guy once unless he was on drugs...

It's not hard to believe that the 15 year old kid had been properly raised to respect and use firearms.

I could shoot a .45 at 15 because my dad would take my brother and me or we'd go with my friend and his dad and go shoot.

I was always taught and shown how to act responsibly with a gun and practice safe measures to prevent an accident.

So yes, it is possible that he could have used a .45 just as easily, but then, we'd probably be talking about a dead perp by the hands of a white kid.

Yea, we will have to agree to disagree, because I think you are dead wrong on this.

Pistol is a last resort weapon, designed to get you to your rifle. If you can choose between a rifle and a pistol, you choose the rifle. And I am a .45 guy.

Most responsible gun owners, especially fathers, will begin training their kids on firearm safety and use by the age of 9 or 10. It all depends on the maturity level of the child. My son was 9 when I begin training him in firearm safety, use and care. He's 11 now and just the other night he sat in front of me and disassembled and cleaned 2 rifles, 1 shotgun, and 2 pistols. He knows how to safely and effectively use them all.

one good rule for those parents wanting to train their kids in firearms is that above all else as long as they are a child, rule #1 when it comes to firearms is they never touch a firearm unless you hand it to them. Rule #2 is they follow your exact instructions at all times when handling or using a firearm.

Its not? Here I am thinking half the country believes firearms are responsible for all evil, why would anyone teach their kids something like that?

Good on you. Some trained police and military personnel cant hit targets, much less in a hostile situation, that are 7 yards in front of them.

Anything is possible. But to say a .45 pistol is more effective than a semiautomatic rifle in most situations is just not true.

Well, we agree on that. Love me some .45

But this is America. Personal responsibility and good parenting are the government's problem. Not each individual.

Awesome

Funny too that he hit the burglar numerous times and the criminal lived. According to the left Assualt weapons are so dangerous and powerful

Sadly, many think that way. As for me I chose to teach my son about firearms to remove the mystery of them from his head, thus lessening the likelihood of him wanting to "check it out" if he happens to be somewhere with an unsecured firearm. I had a kid in my call back in elementary school killed that way. Found a loaded .357 with his cousin and they started playing with it. He got shot in the head. Was only like 10 or 11 yrs old. That's the same age as my son.

I find it funny the AR-15 is even considered and "assault rifle" by the left. It's just a fancy looking semi-automatic rifle.

M14 in Iraq

Ask a Soldier: Does the Army still issue the m14 to sniper and/or infantry units?

M14's in A'stan or Iraq

When you're kicking in a door, you need something with a little more close-up punch.

You'd rather the enemy be inactive from wounds than to kill them, from a strategic point of view. It only takes an undertaker to take care of dead man, but it takes tons of resources and people to care for the living wounded, which saps the enemy's effectiveness and manpower.

I disagree. The laws of physics dictate against a gradual, significant acceleration. That, and I'm pretty sure that nearly every .223 round has a muzzle velocity above 2500

I'll conceed, but here's the issue I was getting at with that round.

Kids should understand and fear weapons if they are in the house. No parent should have them in the house without explaining proper gun safety, and it doesn't take much. Start with the Boy Scouts riflery book if you have to (10 rules of guns safety).

And for the argument of home defense, please consider a shotgun loaded with the proper size shot. Sheetrock walls do not stop bullets.
