checking accounts with no atm fees

I remember reading about a few banks that waive all atm fees. does this include the fee that the atm charges or just the bank atm fee? right now with chase if I get money out of a atm at say a gas station, chase will hit me for a few dollars then the atm provider will also charge me.

I want to stay with chase, but would like to keep some money in one of these no fee checking accounts so that I can avoid the atm fees and dont have to chase down a chase atm to avoid the fees.

anyone else doing this?

Our CapitalOne account refunds ATM fees but it requires a minimum balance.

Most of your larger Credit Unions are doing this...

Need to have one direct deposit per month, 15 debit card transactions, and enroll in online banking/statement delivery.

re: checking accounts with no atm fees

I noticed a good bit of fees with Chase, so I moved to a local bank that paid back ATM fees. I can get money anywhere, even gas station ATMs, and I'll get the fee refunded at the end of the month as long as I have 1 direct deposit and a certain number of debit transactions. I've still yet to try it somwhere like a casino or strip club that charges extrememly high ATM fees though. I'd love to see if the bank would pay that back.

My bank refunds all ATM fees from out of network ATMS. They use to do it the next business day, now its once a month.

Renasant Bank here in AL, I know they are in MS as well.

I do. They do refund all fees at the end of the month and they don't charge you any. The only drawback to Schwab is the lack of physical locations. However, with free postage paid envelopes for deposits, direct deposit and the ability to do deposits on your phone you can do most of your banking as quickly as if you were at a physical location. I have my IRA and brokerage account with them and I am about to do a rollover IRA for my wife over there.

I actually use a local credit union (neighbors fcu) for my day to day banking. They also refund all atm fees. ETA: They also give you 3% on the first 10k in your checking account provided you have 1 direct deposit a month and make like 10 debit card purchases, which is nice.

Mine refunds up to $4.99/transaction. Guess what the Casino charges?

$4.99

I had an account with them. I just can't stand not being able to drive to the bank and get my money, if necessary.

I use Schwab. They are great. I have never waited more than 2 minutes to get a real person on the phone.

I strongly suggest them.

re: checking accounts with no atm fees

I opened an account with Neighbors FCU about 3-4 months ago. They reimburse you for ATM charges from other ATMs up to $4.99

They are also offering 3% APY on balances up to $10,000 if the following happens during the calendar month:

1) use online banking
2) have an Ach come thru your account
3) use your debit card 10 times

If you have a balance of say $15,000 then $10k of it gets the 3% APY and the remaining $5k is subject to the ridiculously low interest rate.

Edit: Just saw your location of Opelousas. Have to live/work/have some affiliation with the BR area to be a member. Sorry.

I think I will go with schwab. No obligations to meet and they will refund all of the fees.

I use Schwab for banking, Roth and 401(k). I used to have my mortgage with them before I refinanced. Have been a customer for about ten years now and have no complaints.

They refund all my ATM charges at the end of each month. They don't have any retail locations but I don't really need one. They will give you postage-paid envelopes to mail deposits in, or you can use their mobile phone app to take pictures of checks and deposit electronically from home whenever. Online billpay works great too, and you can have some vendors send bills automatically to Schwab if you like. Schwab will email you that they received the bill, automatically schedule the bill to be paid on the due date (or do nothing if you prefer), and pay it.

The only drawback I can think of is if you need a physical retail location for stuff like money orders and such.

Easy solution. Bank with a small local bank and link the accounts together to transfer money back and forth.

Or keep enough cash on hand in an emergency fund.
