Hi guys, resident nba expert checking in. Are the grizz legit contenders? While i believe the spurs thuder clippers an heat are better teams, could it be the grizz can matchup well v all these teams? Their punishing frontcourt definitely presents matchup issues for the heat who have fallen in love with small ball... The spurs also have a shaky frontcourt... Thunders bigs are overrated defenders and the clips bigs are terrible defensively. Of course its not all about the bigs though, grizz 3pt denial/defense isnt superb, a mak. Weapon in the arsenal of the thunder spurs and hear... Also you di have to ask whether a team whose best wing player is rudy gay can actually compete for a title. Grizz are 2nd in league in defensive efficiency, and 16th in offense.

barring injuries or zebo going nuclear again, they can't score enough to keep up with those teams in a series.

Semis, perhaps conference finals depending on matchups.

I don't think so. They can win one playoff series that's about it.

when you have the best scoring D in the league, this is not as big as issue

the real key will be the bench, that has been the problem the last few years, starters play great but the bench bombs.

I'm not ready to say title contenders, but I think they can make some noise assuming everyone stays healthy and the bench keeps playing well

I like the Grizzlies, but a title contender? Probably not.

They will get rid of one of the trio of Gasol/Randolph/Gay before the deadline. I'd guess Gay is gone.

Their backcourt isn't special (Conley is good, but is he a Paul, Westbrook, Rondo type of impact player?).

This day in the NBA, having a dominant froncourt with a average backcourt at best may be good to get you past the 1st round, but I don't think they get past the 2nd round.

Now, if they keep the trio together this season, there is a CHANCE depending on matchups. But even if they do, I don't see them getting into the NBA Finals. WC Finals MAYBE.

Gay is the only realistic one that could be dealt and I think it only happens in season if the offer is right

The new owners would be absolutely nuts to deal Gasol or Randolph...that would immediately destroy the increasing fan base

As far as Conley, no he isn't Chris Paul or Russell Westbrook, but he is far more important to this Grizzlies team than pretty much most non-grizz fans understand.

Look at this season and the games that the Grizzlies have lost and look at Conley's stats/play. As Conley goes, the Grizz go

Thats the thing though. I don't think you can count on riding on Conley to get you into the later rounds of the playoffs.

Title teams are almost always top 10 in both offense and defense efficiency.

Plus they could have to face Spurs, OKC, LAC, MIA to win a title. The offense will sink them against those teams.

Best case is they only play 2 of the four and get hot.

They are basically the inverse of SSOL Suns. I loved those teams, but they were too flawed to ever get over the hump.
