I use foxfi. it used to be free, but I think now it's like $6-7 for the full one. The free one still works, but has a use limit and requires the app to be stopped and restarted in order to continue.

I use it quite a bit so it's definitely worth paying a little bit for to support them, imo.

What advantages do these have over what's already on the phone?

don't have to pay extra bull shite to phone companies for tethering/hotspot.

Hmm, I don't think I'm paying extra, but I'm sharing a 6 gig plan. Though I think it was free on the 4 gig plan too.

wifi tether

This if you're rooted, plus it's free.

Foxfi

If you're stock try the free version before you buy because it doesn't work on everything like wifi tether for root. For some reason I couldn't get it to work on my sprint GS3 even though it's supposed to be supported.

Verizon no longer charges for hotspot use, so the apps are pretty irrelevant.

I saw this and just went to try it and I get the message

"If you would like to subscribe to Mobile Hotspot/Mobile Broadband Connect please call....."

Looks like not all plans have free hot spots.

I have a Galaxy Nexus BTW running Jelly bean.

I don't think this is for the old unlimited plans. pretty sure this is only if you are on one of the newer plans.

What does work with sprint and the GS3. Do I have to root for it to work?

Maybe, but staying on the older unlimited plans means staying with an older phone, right? I used to use Foxfi, but at the same time that Verizon allowed data pooling and stopped charging extra for hotspot use, Foxfi started charging, so I don't use it anymore.

Hot spot? Or Bluetooth tether? I use FoxFi to connect to my Asus tablet, but that is a direct bluetooth tether./

Verizon only lets you tether for free if you have a new "share anything" plan or whatever, which means you have signed your contract sometime in about the last 6 months. If you have the old unlimited plan, like myself, you need the app and it doesn't necessarily mean you have to use an old phone. You will be able to keep the unlimited plan in the future even with new phones, but Verizon isn't subsidizing them any more. If you want unlimited data and you need a new phone, you're going to have to drop ~$600 bucks on it.

ETA: I use SVTP for my hotspot. It's not free but it works like a champ. The only feature I wish it had was the ability to restrict broadcasting the SSID.

I have the old unlimited plan on my GS3 and I can't tether. I could when I was rooted, but can't anymore now that I went to Jelly Bean
