If I buy an AR for the first time-

What is the best caliber and why? .223, 5.56, or 7.62 seem to be the most popular?
I'm a deer hunter so I am new to the AR game, but if I try to get my hands on one, just wondering which ammo is most available (under normal circumstances) and what the best performing round is.

I'd have to get an AR10 in .308 because I want to shoot cars to pieces.
Butttttttttttttttttttttttttttt if you want an AR15 I'd get one in 5.56 for ammo cost/availability.

5.56 can shoot .223, but .223 can NOT fire the 5.56 round.
.308 seems to be more readily available at the moment, but both will be hard to come by for quite some time.
If you want to hunt with it, get the .308.

AR-10 will cost more for the gun and more for the ammo so it kinda depends on how much do you want to shoot?

if you're using for deer hunting primarily, i'd go with a bigger round than 5.56.

No one should be using an AR to deer hunt. 5.56 will allow you to buy cheaper .223 also, but .22 rounds are cheap as hell. ARs are just toys unless you varmit/hog hunt a lot, so for most people .22 is the better choice, 5.56/.233 just seems cooler. It's up to you.

Not really using it for hunting, got plenty of long guns for that. I basically want to buy one before they are gone forever, and wanted a fairly verstile round.

7.62x39 is on the same page as the .30-30
More versatile than the 5.56 IMO

5.56 will be a cheaper gun and much cheaper ammo.
Ballistically you really can't compare a 5.56 and a .308.

On a related note, if money isn't an issue, is there a site/store where I can order an AR today? I talked to a guy at BP last night and he said they occasionally get a few in stock and they are gone immediately. Said they stopped taking special orders for AR's.
Could I go to Bowie and have them order one for me?

Probably not to be honest. You will probably have to find a 2nd hand seller and then you will in all likelyhood drastically overpay.

Why not?

You want to put it down faster and not chase it around with a blood trail and/or never find it.

I would get .223 for certain.
7.62, 5.45x39 may not be available AT ALL after Biden/Obama get through with their EOs.

To each his own, but if I'm hunting somewhere that allows high powered rifles then that's what I'll use. On the flip side, If I'm close enough to be confident with an AR, then I'm close enough to be positive with a 3" slug.

AR does not equal .223... there are many calibers that can be had.

Well I'd probably use something else as well, but I don't see any reason why someone shouldn't hunt deer with an AR in a suitable caliber.

Right, but that's a lot of internal moving parts, which directly affect accuracy. It's the reason deer hunters prefer bolt action rifles to the old semi-autos of the 60's, they're just more accurate. At 60 yards it doesn't matter, but at 150 yards it's borderline irresponsible to be shooting any caliber AR at a deer unless you are really, really good with that weapon.

If you are wanting to buy it today money better not be an issue. gunbroker.com has them for sale for some really jacked up prices. Might try bayoushooter.com or the la sportsman classifieds first.
