With the 3-4 4-3 thread thought I would see if the posters here have as dim a view of our LB corp as I do.

By the end of the year the starters seemed to be Vilma Lofton and Hawthorne.

Vilma, Jonathan 6-1 230 9yrs
Came back from injury and no camp and still beat out our younger LB's for playing time.

Shanle, Scott 6-2 245 10yrs
Seldom used at all.

Humber, Ramon 5-11 232 4yrs
Saw him on special teams.

Hawthorne, David 6-0 246 5yrs
Hurt then made the starting line up.

Chamberlain, Chris 6-1 238 5yrs
Hurt.

Casillas, Jonathan 6-1 227 4yrs
Alot of playing time. Seemed to be 4th LB on depth chart.

Johnson, Austin 6-2 240 R
Just aquired.

Herring, Will 6-3 241
Seldom used.

How good is our depth at LB? Well If Vilma can come back after injuries and missing camp and having a new DC and def. system and still beat out the LB's that we had what does that say?
No much at all IMO.

Herring Shanle and Humber should be gone. Vilma will be cut if he doesn't take a large pay cut. We don't know if Chamberlain will come back healthy and even then he was seen as a back-up and teacher of Spags system (which has passed in need).
That leaves Lofton(good player)Hawthorne(Didn't see high quality of play) Casillas(back-up) and a rookie just signed.

While some want stud WR's and a whole new secondary I submit as a unit this is the greatest need to over haul. I believe we need new players at the Will and Strong Side and better competition for the bench. How that happens I don't know except to believe that Loomis as usual gets it done.

While I totally agree with you, LBrs are our weak point, I think most people, like myself who have mentioned this before, mentioned this Bc of particular d-line personnel we have.

Jordan was a 34 end in college
Bunkley was a 34 NT for the broncos
Wilson is the prototypical 34 OLB pass rusher
We currently have 2 MLBs in Lofton and Vilma
Hawthorne is your other OLB with Wilson standing up and either rushing or covering

So I mean it's not totally far fetched Bc we def have the personnel for it, but Spags is a 43 guy all the way.

ETA: Also, Chamberlain will be coming back from injury as Casillas finally seemed to stay on the field with regularity. I think a lot of our problems there had to do with a combination of Vitt and Vilma being suspended, Hawthorne being injured to start the year, and Chamberlain lost for the year. That's 3 starters and/or first off the bench guys we didn't have on the field to start and their position coach wasn't there for half the season and then had to become the head coach.

I'm not making excuses so much as those are reasons I have hope for next year they won't be so terrible (besides Lofton obviously)

For the most part I agree with you. The Saints' linebacker corp is abysmal, and it has been since they lost fujita. We should probably keep Herring and Humber though. We don't want them to start or anything, but they are cheap special teams contributers. I don't think there should be a point in getting rid of them, although I would not be upset if it happened. I'm pretty sure that Chamberlain is cheap. If he is then I don't mind his hanging around as decent depth. Mainly we just need to get a new starter for one olb spot and competition for hawthorne.

Chamberlain was playing really well before the injury. I think if Vilma isn't brought back, he'll start the WLB. Then Heater at SLB and, of course, Lofton at MLB. I like that Casillas has been healthy and has experience now. Plus special teams. Shanle, Humber, and maybe Herring are out. If vimla goes, then Herring may stay because of special teams.

isn't herring's contract somewhere like 2million for next year? that's kind of an expensive spot for us for a special team guy, I think he may be cut.

Hawthrone played SLB when he came back in and it wasn't a position he was used to either. He had played MLB and WLB in Seattle I think. And on top of that, he was hurt for awhile like you already mentioned(only started 10 games). I think he played sometimes on the weak side but Vilma was usually at that spot once he came back after his injury.

True. I know Blu(hurry and get back) is still high on him for being injured, out of position and learning a new system but dang...did anyone at anytime see him make one play? I can't recall a single play all year. I said before in another thread that the only two LB's I ever saw all year make a play or read one or shoot a gap and shed a block was ol Vilma and lofton.

Don't know.
Seems to be taking a break before coming back strong with his beloved draft and free agent talk.
Only guessing. I do miss his threads.
