Has anyone done a drive hunt before?

We have had several members of our club suggest a drive hunt for the guys who have went dry this yr myself included (rough yr). This would be my first drive hunt.

I was just kind of wondering what are your thoughts on a drive hunt. Andwht are somethings that i can suggest to the pres to help keep it safe.

Dude, i went on a hunting trip this year in ohio. They have a 6 day gun season, and i would be willing to bet drive hunting is the ONLY way they know how to hunt up there! I swear every friggn road we turned on you could look in the woods or field and see 10-15 hunters orange vest. They drive the hell out of some deer during those 6 days. And we saw alot of deer killed, everyone just needs to wear orange and know where each other is at

I had never seen anything like it. Like literally woods filled with people. Drive down the road and see 3-4 hunters like 2 trees apart. Saw one guy at the store had a small 6 point, he said "i was about to shoot it when it ran in front of me but my buddy pulled the trigger first" hahaha.

The best way is to put a stand row of people out in the woods about 200-250 yards apart and only have one or two people walking. Put the standrow in a straight line and make sure it is 100% clear to everyone that you absolutely do not shoot in the direction of the other people on the stand row.

Of course wear plenty orange.

The people walking should be whooping every now and then so people know where they are. Let the standrow get put out and then have the drivers parallel it on either side. An old pet dog that likes to just frick off in the woods and not run deer also helps to jump them up.

i don't think it will get that big. We have 10 members on 1258 acres and we are trying to bring 1 guest each. I hope it doesn't get any bigger.

My idea was to use shotguns only but it was shot down by several members who only own rifles so i'm not sure how it will work.

That's a rule at plenty of dog hunting clubs. It definitely makes you feel better knowing the dude next to you doesn't have a .300 in his hands, but you still don't want to shoot down the standrow.

I am 100% against the whole walking row of people thing. That's dangerous as hell.

I wouldn't participate if rifles were involved. Sounds like a recipe for disaster especially with twenty people.

It can be done with rifles as long as you have responsible people who are aware of where everybody is all the time.

You don't want somebody who's so mad at the deer that he will shoot 100% of the time as soon as he sees brown hair without thinking a little bit first.

We do it where I hunt in Pennsylvania. Row of guys go in one way, whistling and whoppin the whole tim so everyone knows everyone e else's location, put hunter(s) in a stand that sends a shot into the side of a hill. I was nervous the first time but it works great because the deer up there stop moving after opening day.

I agree. I'd have no problems if it was a few people I knew. I just don't trust a hunting club and guests.

Yea you definitely have to know the people involved and if you have to hurt somebody's feelings and tell em their buddy can't come because he's dangerous, so be it.

Are you sure they were hunting deer? I am from up there, and this method is very popular for rabbit, pheasant, etc....

Drivers use shotguns, and standers use rifles... I don't like the idea of 10 people bringing a guest each. 20 people on 1250 acres is too many.

Do something like 4 guys driving, while 6 sit on stands. Break it into sections, so everybody can move around a couple times, and let people swap out on being the drivers and standers.

Require everybody to have radios. It's good to yell and whatnot just for reference, but the more communication you have, the better.

Thanks for the info yall. I really am going to try and get it limited to shotguns and maybe limit guest to 5 members , maybe we can draw numbers to keep it fair.
