He's got to mean, six of those little cans of paste (which is still a lot) and not six 12 ounce cans.

if you're only using paste, though, it's going to take a lot of water to add to it. Either way, it looks like he's making a huge vat of sauce there.

I wondered about that too. Maybe it's 6 - 12 oz cans of tomato sauce. That would sound closer to the correct proportion with the water.

I'm guessing if Tim's only using one tomato product, it's paste, though.

A 12 oz can of paste to a quart of liquid sounds right...but a good quality crushed tomato will produce a better sauce.

If you can tolerate his Mr. Rogers persona, Fabio has a simple marinara recipe that is actually pretty good.

Paste / water ratio for me is 3 cans of water per 1 small can of paste.
