Who owns the land behind the levee, what's the punishment?

I've always been told the land owners in front the levee own the land behind.
Growing up in SJP it was never a problem. Tons of people go root around back there, crawfishing, cutting firewood, shooting clays, no problems. Just wondering if anyone has a concrete answer.
I don't want to get stuck back there in Iberville or EBR and answer with "I didn't know". In SJP, no one would ever mess with you, and if they did, you'd know them personally.

I was under the impression the parish/state owned it, but I could very well be wrong.

I think it depends where you are, as for as who owns the land be it private or state. North of vidalia the levee has numerous private owners.

lol @ it's trespassing, give me a break on that one. Levee board sign said $50 fine. nbd, I'll pay that.
I know buy a $100 permit from the state and cut all the firewood I want for 1 year. That's a fact. So all this trespassing talk is just trolling for someone who might hunt a "secret spot" back there.
Trespassing might be the answer, but there's definitely more to it that just "trespassing".

In Darrow there's a guy living back there, on a house with barrels tied to the bottom of it everywhere.
We met him once, about 10 of us cutting wood, he had a gun, we all left.

They have levee patrol that drives around. We were back there shootin a bunch of shite the other day and the guy pulled up and simply said "y'all know you aren't supposed to be shooting back here." We just said ok and he left. We continued.

This was the case for my dad's land in Montz. He used to get rent from a barge company that used his land to tie up some of their barges. Not much money though.

i've been run off a few times in hs shooting doves back the levee by the grain elevator...cop just said ya'll aren't supposed to be shooting back here...coulda been more to do with the grain elevator
used to squirrel hunt in another area behind the levee where the batcher woods were thick and deep, most fox squirrels i ever seent...never got run out of there

Correct. The batture, in every instance I've seen, is owned by the same person as the land outside the levee.

Actually, I believe in those instances, the grain elevators/refineries/ship yards etc. own the rights to the land. Since they have invested hundred of thousands, if not millions in pipelines and various equipment to load/unload ships and barges. Plus the security risk from haji trying to blow shite up.

The french unit of measurement, which most of the property down in SELA was an arpent. The arpent is smaller than an acre and if memory serves me a deed for an arpent will be 192 feet "more or less" and an acre is 208 feet.
That being said, all land along the river, when it was divided, was given equal river frontage. It can be wider in "the back" and most of the "old time" measurements were 40 Arpents deep.
Anyway, to answer your question, yes the land owner most of the time owns from the "toe of the river edge and at least 40 arpents deep.

actually the right of way is 15' out from the toe and heal. but idk about "ownership."

State owns to the mean high water mark. Private ownership begins there.

Nope
SOMEBODY owns the land. It is properly referred to as "batture" property.
Typically the same person or entity owns land on both sides of the levee. The levee board owns a servitude for the maintenance of the levee.
You can be charged with trespassing by the levee board for going onto the levee, and you can be charged with trespassing for entering the batture property. You'll also be liable for any damages (like cutting trees).
It's really simple. Unless you own the property, or have been granted access to it by the owner, stay off of it --- or be prepared to suffer some consequences.

@ dawg23, yea, they go crazy ticketing runners on top the levee...
Most places I park my car I trespass until I reach the sidewalk.
All I got from this was minus the levee board asking you to leave. It's pretty much fair game. Which is the feeling I had the whole time.
