As I recall many of Mac's DL and LB were barely over 200lbs going against much larger players of Notre Dame, Nebrasca, etc. Yet they were always in the game. Overachievers they were.

Mac got the best out of his kids there was never any question of that. Great defensive coach.

Conservative even in an age of very conservative football...yes he was.

Not the recruiter, especially late in his career. LSU got in later than most in the recruitment of the black athlete and Mac's last 6 years reflected that.

He didn't beat a team that finished in the top 20 at the end of the year in any of his final 6 seasons.

I loved old Mac as a kid (he was ushered out when I was 14 years old), but my Dad never could stand him. Alot of similarities between he and Miles, including both following guys who won national titles and forever being in their shadow.

I watched Dr. Casanova play. I get goosebumps remembering our defenses back then. Something about Cholly Mac I always admired. Assuming Dr. Casanova ia correct, this explains the difference between Cholly Mac and Miles. Cholly Mac won with inferior talent, Miles loses games that should be won with superior talent. I would take Cholly Mac any day...

Mac obvious didn't know how to recruit if he couldn't even get players of adequate size. Advantage Miles.

Tommy Casanova and Craig Burns still hold the NCAA Record for returning 3 punts for TD's vs. Ole Miss in the 61-17 win.

I give you the typical LSU fan....somehow living in some irrational glory that was LSU under Cholly Mac----the stadium was loud because we weren't expected to beat the 'big names' thus as the stadium's reputation grew so did the ledgend of Cholly Mac.

In 18 years as head coaic he produced 4 teams that lost fewer than 3 games, AND 2 of those came in his first 3 years; therefore, he won with the previous coaches talent (sarcasm).

Go look at his total body of work...I guarantee you NO ONE would want that today.

It takes a special kind of mindless obsessive hatred to turn a really nice piece on Coach Mac into an attack on Les Miles.

You, sir or madam, soil the title "LSU Grad".

Not bashing Coach Mac. He was a good coach. But, geez, even suggesting Coach Mac is better than Miles is retarded. Does Les have some game day decisions to work on? Yes. Could we have won a couple more games? Yes. But, relax, Miles has won way, way more big times games for LSU than Coach Mac. This is a fact.

Miles is a great recruiter and developer of talent. So, Coach Mac got fiesty guys to play hard. Not many SEC titles over his tenure. Again, Coach Mac was a good coach but he never even came close to winning it all. He never put droves of players in the league.

We did play for it all last year and were realistically a couple plays away this year for playing for it all again. These aren't DiNardo type teams. LSU is a legitimate power house under Les. Trust me, LSU football is well respected across the country. No one wants us on their schedule.

Think back to what we lost this year -- Tyrone Matheiu, Chris Faulk, Willford, starting RT, Alfred Blue, Wing going goofy, etc. etc. Does shite happen? Yes but come on, we had several big blows this year and we still won 10.

Gray, I'm sure you notice after every season, this board is filled with Johnny-come-lately roaches with join dates in the last couple months that come on here with the sole purpose of spewing idiotic bullshite to bash Les Miles.

Of course, a lot of them are alters of the regular crew of rantards, I'm sure.

Why didn't he get superior talent intead?

Nope. The losses that do happen are always to good teams that are comparable in talent level. The only sane criticism would be failing to blow out inferior teams, but the wins are still there and that is what counts.

Good comment. Two things.

1. Mac had to coach against Bear during his entire tenure. Bear Bryant assistants and players just didn't beat or outrecruit Bear.

2. Mac didnt' have the support of the school in terms of money and facilities that Les has. Mac had to really do it on the cheap.

I would take Miles. You'd finish 20th to 30th most years. And I'd finish in the top 10 most years.

Nearly every one was doing it on the cheap. The explosion in facilities, etc came after Mac.

Not the factories like OU, UA, Uneb, etc. It was a different era, scholly rules, hell almost all rules were different. By all accounts, Les is the real deal and a pretty decent man. Having known Mac personally, I can say that there was no finer man in the profession. Great coach, cared about people, moral, ethical. No one who knew him has a negative thing to share about him. I'd love to see him have a shot with the resources that Miles has. Might look exactly the same with the ultra conservative personality.
