If your family out of pocket limit is $8000 but your member out of pocket limit is $4000. Is the $4000 for each individual member are just the primary person on the account. My wife just had a few enormous hospital bills and I want to know if I am shelling out 8k or 4k.

Depends what type of benefit plan you have. Some family out of pocket amounts are per family ( in aggregate) and some are based on the number of individual members meeting the individual amount (for example, 2 or 3 member maximum). It should be stated on your policy or in the contract booklet you received with the policy.

Usually the 4k is per individual and the 8k is per family. In other words, if your wife is hospitalized for 30 days, the most you are out is 4k. If your wife had a baby with complications and the kid and wife are both hospitalized for a while, you're looking at 8k out of pocket.
