When people protest so much I sense that they are talking out of two sides of their face. It's a good hire and remains to see just how good. Arky fans are a funny lot.

Eh you just have to understand that dynamics of Tim Horton. It's a two sided story with him and his coaching career.

The Horton name itself is very powerful within the University of Arkansas. Tim played at Arkansas and his dad Harold just retired as the Executive Director of the Razorback Foundation (the AD fundraising arm). The family is more connected to the football program than most any other family in the state.

With that being said they are a great family. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who would ever say an ill word about them. They enjoy a spectacular reputation around the state and Tim goes out of his way to befriend and keep in contact with all the high school coaches around the state no matter the size of the school. Coaches love that and they love him for that.

That being said, his coaching abilities are not at the level of his all-star personality to the point that there were rumors that he might be fired last year. However, people have long been worried that firing him would fracture the firing head coaches ties to the high school coaches. As a RB's coach our RB's actually fumbled the ball more every single year that he coached here. The number went the opposite direction from what you want to see. That is what led to the talk about him possibly being hired.

On the recruiting front, he signed about 73% of instate guys that he offered last time I crunched the numbers. It's a pretty solid # as during that same timeframe when I did the research, LSU was only signing like 72% of instate guys that they offered. However, it's a completely different caliber of athlete. A lot of those guys only had major offers of Arkansas and that's it where as LSU signs 10 guys instate that are as good as the top guy in Arkansas. With that being said, his track record wasn't as good with the 4* guys. Whether that was due to Petrino or not we will never know since he wasn't retained.

I stand by my position that you guys got an awesome guy as a coach. He's going to be coaching a position that you barely even use to it's worth the risk on his coaching abilities to have someone setup shop back in Malzahn's old stomping grounds. It's a great plan by Malzahn and I applaud him for it.

Not sad to see him go. Couldn't recruit that we'll and the RBs got worse under him it seemed like.

Anyone that leaves Arky for another school:

a) isn't responsible for anything good that happened with the team
b) is directly or indirectly responsible for various bad things that happened to them
c) sucks at life

Your last staff had quite a few "ace recruiters" as well. How did that turn out for you?

2009: 8-5
2010: *Redacted because it does not support my argument*
2011: 8-5
2012: 3-9

These are more accurate fumble stats because they only include fumbles by RBs:

2008: 2
2009: 3
2010: 6
2011: 6
2012: 19

There is a reason that he wasn't retained by CBB. That reason has nothing to to with his grade A personality or connections around the state.

Is it your opinion that we are now scrambling to fill his "non position" on our staff?

Pros: He's a nice guy you'd like to share an ice cream sandwich with.

Cons: He can't coach worth a frick and you have to play six degrees of separation to credit him for being an "ace recruiter"

Arkansas fans hate to see such a swell fella leave the state but other than repeating that he is a good guy, not a single frick will be given. Dead weight as far as football is concerned.

But congrats!

I was in Little Rock last week and had the conversation with several die hard Arky fans about Horton. To a man, they all agreed he would be a huge loss. He is very highly respected across the state by everyone that knows anything about football.

Of course, now that he pops up on the radar for Auburn the jilted lovers on here say he sucks.

Horton is a great guy and a class act. I hope you guys pay and treat him well. I'm not sad about this at all though, we weren't going to retain him unless we couldn't get someone bigger. If horton left that means that we got a higher tier coach. I say this because you're fricking crazy if you think horton wouldn't have stayed at arkansas if he was offered any on the field coaching position.

Rushing Attempts (season) (SEC rank)
2007: 625 (1st)
2008: 378 (12th)
2009: 395 (12th)
2010: 421 (10th)

2008: 7
2009: 6
2010: 9
2011: 13

How many of those were by the RBs and how many by the QB/WR/TE/etc?

Example, of the 15 lost in 2012...
1 by Wilson
1 by Gragg
1 by Horton
1 by Herndon

The other 11 on the RBs.
