Oregon wore out Kansas State with hurry up. We traditionally wear out people with power. What if we started doing both next year: hurry up power football as opposed to hurry up spread. If defenses get gassed by tempo and worn done by power, it seems to me to stand to reason that the combination could be lethal. And...discuss

You can't wear down teams by going 3 and out...

Because it doesn't take nearly as much energy from the defense to stuff 3 hb toss dives up the middle as it does to cover from sideline to sideline against a spread team.

It could be done with a complimentary screen game...... we don't have one of those.

Their hurry up only works because they consistently get first downs. Our power game works by keeping the opposing defense on the field for so long when we only run a few plays. Compare this: Oregon can get 5 plays off in 40 seconds of clock time where as LSU might not even run 2. However, both teams possess the ball for the same amount of actual (not clock time).

What LSU does is consistently run clock like they are up by one score with 4 minutes left the entire game. Even if LSU goes 3 and out, they still manage to take 2 minutes off the game clock. Under the Oregon system, LSU would only take off 30-40 seconds if that.

Both philosophies are equally effective (Oregon's possibly more effective) when the team is making first downs. However, if you are struggling offensively, the Les Miles Method of offense is a vastly more effective system.

If you run a hurry up then the coach doesn't have as much time to gab between plays. Seriously, that dude is always talking.

I'm not sure where this idea comes from that Oregon only runs fast. They mix tempo up all the time. They just went on a 5 minute, 10 play drive to close out the KSU game.

They take the extra time when it benefits them and go quickly when it benefits them. It's all situational.

During the game.. when they are trying to build a lead.. they hurry up and blaze through plays after every successful play.

Nothing demoralizes a team more than running right over them. To do it at a faster pace would be, I think , a good move . When our running game is rolling I'm always yelling for them to speed it up . Of course , you need a consistent passing attack to at least keep the defense honest .

It only works if the play calling is creative enough that they can't just stay in a base formation and stuff everything. LSU would go 3-and-out every time with the way our plays get called right now.

I wish about 3 times a game we would run a hurry up, and either check to a toss sweep or a bubble screen...

That would be sweet!

LSU's power offense is built around 220-230 pound RB's who constantly rotate to stay fresh and linemen who range from 325-350 pounds. Running an Oregon type of hurry up would end up wearing ourselves out. We can't have the best of both worlds.

I think a mix would work well. Speed up the pace to get quick scores and build a little lead, then switch to a slower more power-oriented style to wear their defense down and keeping your own defense fresh.

I think u are correct.
LSU ran some of that and seemed to want to do more and more as the season wore on. Lack of OL depth and inexperience prolly slowed it down definetely delayed it. For a while there we couldnt even line up correctly. big time coaching to get the OL fixed and in rhythm so quickly after Hurst quit and Williford got knocked completely the @@@@ Out. 3 and outs dont help either
Its almost unfair to not be allowed to catch your breath and he we go again for the defense. tempo in football is becoming as important as it is in BBall. With our depth we could really own the 4th qaurter like Oregon tonite, one wd think, that last drive was impressive.
Good OP

You can't just call plays faster and see the benefits. The speed at which Oregon runs the offense means that the QB is forced to make a lot of decisions very quickly, up to and including calling the plays. You don't get a whole lot of time to read coverages so you need creative play-calling that will keep the defense on the back foot and you won't have a chance to check the coverage and audible out of the called play prior to snapping. That's why a lot of these plays involve an option, so you can adjust on the fly.

It's really a whole system and if you tried to graft it on top of our current crappy offense you'd just get a crappy offense that spends even less time on the field. For a few scripted plays every so often it would be fine, but to run it consistently would require a significant change in offensive philosophy.
